Believe it or not, items can go missing while in storage, causing massive disruption for you. If you are new to Adwords in the last few years, you may not know that the content and search networks were once united. Google split them in order to give more control to advertisers, and most advertisers immediately turned off the content network for their ads because of the click fraud that had previously been suspected by owners of content web sites.

However, times have changed. Click fraud is nothing like as common as it was, thanks to Google’s very heavyhanded measures in closing the accounts of any Adsense user who has any strange clicking activity on their site. This is a big problem for Adsense site owners because it means that any bored kid anywhere in the world can put them out of business by repeatedly clicking on their ads. But for Adwords advertisers, it means that the content network has opened up again.

Advantages of advertising on the content network instead of the search network include a cheaper cost per click, and a lot more control. You can actually pick the exact sites that you want your ad to appear on.

The last of these points is vitally important. When you are advertising on the content network, always specify target sites for all of your ads. In fact you should go even further and specify the exact pages of the site where you want your ad to appear.

Just like advertising on the search network, you want to make sure that the people who see your ad are very interested in your product. You don’t want untargeted clicks. So for example if you are promoting an exercise treadmill, you want your ad on a fitness site, but not on pages about weight training.

In like manner, people don’t want MLM, per se, but they certainly can see it as an answer to their need. Also they don’t like to be sold to, but they love to buy.

So here’s another thought: get your prospects to sell themselves on using your opportunity to meet their need. The best way to do that is to give them useful information, instead of selling your opportunity and products.

The second thing you need to nail is COMMUNICATION.

Why is communication so important? Not only does it help you build a relationship, you find new needs your customers don’t even know they have! It works online or offline, keep the communication flowing and make sure you aren’t always pitching in every communication.

The simple act of 2 way communication does wonders. Not only does it help you build a relationship, you find new needs your customers don’t even know they have! Just make certain every communication isn’t a sales job.

It can be as easy as a phone call, or an email with a tasty tidbit of info they need. But in the end, you become the go-to guy or gal.

Then comes VALUE.

By adding extra value to your customer, they are bound to reciprocate.

Just share your unique knowledge… add more value… and they will see how different you are compared to the competition. (You’ll smoke the competition!)

My customers think I’m ‘just’ a copywriter… but only at first. I end up blowing them away with good marketing advice too… for nothing. Now I’m different than most of my competition. And that’s a good thing!

Don’t be one of those people who only do what they need to do to get by… get outside of that mindset.

Finally, CUSTOMER CARE.

I hate the phrase customer service. I want my clients to be CARED FOR. Big difference in my book. Early in my career, this brought up it’s own problems (like needy, clingy clients.) But after I learned better how to choose my clients, it works like gangbusters. When you combine it with value that’s a winning combination.

And when you consider how lousy customer service is online these days (few marketers seem to “get it”) an exemplary customer care can be a HUGE differentiator.

How come?

We were showing his committment to customer care, and if customers didn’t get a problem solved, they could call him directly and he would make sure they did!

Which would you rather have?

Perhaps you’re thinking “That’s good for Rick, but I don’t want to answer all those calls.” Fair enough. What may surprise you is that Rick got very few calls regarding customer serice issues. But he did end up getting some good feedback on his product, and several good ideas.

Bottom line – Not only did customers have Rick’s cell phone number as a “security blanket” that made them feel cared for, but Rick saw other benefits too. Talk about a win-win!

When your highest cost is acquiring a NEW customer, taking care of EXISTING customers is the cheapest and most effective way to build your business PERIOD!

In the next couple of weeks I will publish a series of articles, each will detail a step on the way to a rewarding affiliate marketing business. The first article is written for people who are completely new to the subject and are still looking for information. I will suggest a simple definition of affiliate marketing and show some simple ideas for finding lucrative products.

If you are an experienced marketer, or if you understand the concept and know how to locate products, this article is not for you. The following articles will include more advanced steps and even experienced marketers may find them interesting.

Let’s start by trying to define “affiliate marketing”. I always say that there is a similarity between Affiliate Marketing and the California Gold Rush of the 19th century. The fortune is there and you have to uncover it. Anyway, back to the definition: the affiliate marketer (you) gets a nice commission from the product seller every time a purchase is made by one of the visitors that you have sent to their sale page.

Roughly, you’ll find three types of products: material ones – from shoes to yachts; information products – videos, software, ebooks, that are instantly downloaded to the purchaser’s computer; and subscriptions to newsletters, registrations to a course etc. Thousands and thousands of sellers pay commission to affiliates for purchases and for leads.

So, you see, the gold is there, all over Internet Marketing World. The question is how to find it. And, indeed, many people who decide to try affiliate marketing discover that the first step they need to take, i.e. finding the right product to promote, is the most difficult part of the whole process.

Let me suggest a few ideas for starters:

1. Have you ever purchased a product online which you really liked? Why not try to become an affiliate? Go to the product’s site or sales letter, click on the “affiliate program” link. You’ll find there all the information you need.

2. Think about your hobbies. Subjects you are really interested in, such as sewing, poker playing, gardening, anything. You may know a lot about your hobby and perhaps you are a member of some forums. This will come very handy when you are ready to promote the product you choose. For instance, if your hobby is poker. You play with friends on weekends; you watch the TV poker shows. Search for a poker learning software or course that you can easily promote.

3. Do a little research on the Internet. Think of products that do very well in the United States but are unknown to Europeans, become an affiliate and promote the product using Google Adwords campaigns in Europe. You can do the same with a product that you’ve discovered in Europe, or any foreign country, and promote it in North America.

4. Follow the popular products on your kids’ list. Talk to them and to their friends or to any group of teenagers to find out what they like. These are usually best selling items.

5. Make a habit of looking at the popular magazines. They usually report on the latest trends and fashionable products.

6. And let’s not forget the obvious: register to become an affiliate at Commision Junction, ClickBank and other Providers of affiliate programs. Search their marketplace to find their best selling products.

This is because search engines do not position ads according to “first come first serve.” Instead the ad with the highest bid will get the highest position. You will need to carefully budget ads so that you never run out of money. It is pointless spending money on premier positions and not having enough money to sustain your ad position. Search engines protect their customers from incurring losses by allowing caps to be put on ads. Of course if you go beyond this cap your ad will be pulled.

3. It is very important to follow up with your campaign. There is risk involved with every ad and nobody knows its worth until it has been proven on the open market. It is imperative that advertisers pay attention to every detail of their campaign, so that they can make quick changes to avert disaster further down the road.

One of the most common vulnerabilities – and paradoxically the most easily cured – is to ensure that each directory on your site contains an index file. By default, web browsers, when directed to a directory look first of all for a file named index. This could be followed by a variety of extensions such as .html, .htm, .shtml or .php to name the most common ones.

If the browser does not encounter the index file, it will display the entire directory in the form of a clickable navigation list, disclosing all its contents for the world to see, thus leaving your precious and often restricted content wide open to any type of malicious action.

To prevent this from happening you should make sure that you have at least one or a combination of the 4 following basic security measures in place:

Security measure 1: Ensure that each directory contains an index file by renaming the default page you want to be shown to index. Then make sure that all the internal links to that page are updated as well!

Security measure 2: Create an empty index file. When arriving at the directory, a blank page will be shown, but you will no longer be displaying a directory listing. You could also provide a message and a clickable link on that page to take your visitors to the correct page.

Security measure 3: Create an index file that contains a redirection to the page you want to be shown. There are many free and easily implemented code snippets available that will allow you to do so and your visitors will not even notice that they are being redirected.

Security measure 4: If you have downloadable content that people have to pay for, do not keep it it the same directory as the sales page, but keep it in a separate, secure directory and set up your payment processor to that directory. This way you ensure that only people who have paid for the content have access to it.

When selling products online as an Internet Marketer or otherwise, you are more prone to people trying to get to your restricted content so as to avoid having to pay for it. We’ve all had friends in our circle who were known as “Mary & John”, and when “John” split “Mary” was alone. Mary was the “odd” number at the dinner party and we were all concerned about her. Well, today it seems that the union of Customer & Service have had a breakup. Service has split and Customer is on his/her own.

Today, let me tell you a story that many of you will find humorous but is all too common. I can tell you this without fear of our local editor getting sued because it’s about me, but business owners take note that you don’t fit the profile of company “X”.

Four weeks ago I decided that I needed another green recycling can from my trash pickup company. We’ll call them Brown Keg Trash Pickup, an anonymous company in the interest of avoiding litigation. I called their Customer Service number, and as an environmentally conscious citizen requested my extra recycle can. The cheerful voice on the other end of the line chirped, “Of course, we’ll have one delivered in 48 hours.” After giving her all the pertinent location information, I hung up the phone with the satisfied feeling of a good citizen.

I arrived home about 5 p.m. the next day and I was happy to see another green can at the mouth of my driveway. When I looked again, I noticed that I had another green can – but it was without a lid. I quickly dialed my cheerful telephone voice at Brown Keg Company thanking her graciously for the rapid service and then told her about the missing lid. Just as cheerfully as the first time, she told me to leave it at the end of my driveway after my usual trash pickup and they would replace the entire unit since they didn’t have extra lids. I agreed, and after hanging up the phone I pondered their plight of having lidless cans but no extra lids. I conjured up all sorts of scenarios that explained where all the lids to the lidless cans went, and sympathized with their predicament.

Well, 3 days went by and there sat my poor, green, lidless can at my driveway’s mouth and a replacement never arrived. Feeling empathy for this green plastic waif, I returned it to the side of it’s brother that had a lid. I called my cheerful Customer Service voice again, and reiterated the plight of my poor lidless can and after a chuckle she assured me a complete unit would be forthcoming. I found it necessary to make use of my lidless friend, and put it out the next pickup day filled to the brim. Fortunately, it wasn’t windy and all the contents remained inside it. That was 2 weeks ago, and life being what it is other more important tasks have occupied me until this morning when facing another pickup day I thought of my lidless friend.

Once more I picked up the phone and called my trash pickup company, and this time I listened to a litany of choices of buttons I could punch and chose my cheerful Customer Service button again. I was transferred, listened to a brief melody when there was a “click” and I expected my cheerful voice to chirp “hello”. The next thing I heard was another click, silence, and then the dreaded dial tone that means you’ve been disconnected. Not being one of the “fainthearted”, I simply redialed my number. Again there was the litany of button choices, my choice and the music, and just when I began to feel that all was right with the world I heard – “click”, “dial tone” and nothing.

This was not the morning for the phone to be playing games with me, so I made one more determined effort and REDIALED! “NASA, we have lift-off !” I once more heard the litany of button choices, but this time I outfoxed that monotonous voice and punched “0″. I asked for the Manager of Customer Service, I was given her name and was transferred. What greeted my eager ear was, “You’ve reached the voicemail of ……., please leave your name and number and she’ll return your call.”

So here we sit – my lidless, green can and I facing another pick-up day. This eager-to-serve plastic green waif must bravely face another dutiful day half-clothed.

You must admit that is an amusing story, and one that far too many of us have lived through, but what a sad commentary it is about our business community. Doesn’t it make you wonder if our language has changed so drastically that what we interpret “Customer Service” to mean – is not what today’s business owners mean. It makes me wonder when the marriage of Customer and Service broke-up, leaving us all the lonely ones.

Entrepreneurs and business owners take note! If you’re going to have a number for your customers to access your Customer Service, please follow these rules.

* Have the phone manned by an employee that can hear thunder and see lightening. * Give that employee training in helping the caller and not shuffling the problem to another desk. * Have an overseer, who can also hear thunder and see lightening, check that all incoming complaints were handled appropriately.

After learning how to find your customers and what they want; after getting them committed to doing business with YOU; and after wooing them to keep them as your customers – WHY WOULD YOU LET “SERVICE” DIVORCE “CUSTOMER?”
