Basics Of Baking Pans Explained

by Chris Channing

When you are getting ready to bake something it is important that you know about the baking pans and baking dishes you can use. There might be more than you think you need to know about baking pans. Baking pans are available in different sizes and shapes and can be made out of different materials.

The difference in the size of the baking pan determines how many volumes of batter the pan can hold. It is important that you use the right size pan for the dish you are preparing. If you use a pan that is too large it will cause the depth of the batter to be shallower, in turn causing the batter to bake quicker. Using a smaller baking pan will have a reverse effect where the batter will be deeper and it will bake longer.

Some examples of different sized baking pans are a cake pan, a loaf pan, and a pie pan. Cake pans can be round or square. Two other types of cake pans are the angel food cake pan and springform pans. Loaf pans are generally large with flat bottoms. Pie pans are only meant for baking pies in; they have a flat bottom with sides all around.

Baking pans are made generally from glass and metal. It is commonly required that you will have to reduce your oven’s temperature by twenty-five degrees if you are going to use a glass baking dish in it. Recipes will generally tell you whether you need to use a metal baking pan or a glass baking dish.

You will probably want to know what the dimensions, volume, and the depth of your baking pan are. If you want to find out the dimensions of your pan then all you have to do is measure from one edge to another. It is important that you measure the inside of the edge though, if you measure outside then the thickness of your pan will be included in the measurement.

If you want to measure the depth of your pan then all you have to do is put a ruler straight up from the bottom to the top of the pan. Make sure you do not slant your ruler or else it will throw off your measurement. Lastly if you are figuring the volume of a pan then simply pour pre-measured water in cups into the pan until it is filled to the brim.

Overview

What should you remember or know about baking pans before choosing one? You should now that most conventional ovens hold pans no bigger than 17 x 14 inches. You should remember to measure the depth, volume, and dimensions. When measuring your dimensions it is good to know that 1 inch equals 2.54 cm and 1 cup equals 237 ml for your volume. You should use the type of pan that a recipe calls for whether it’s a glass dish or a metal pan. The last thing you need to be sure to remember is to use the correct size pan, if you don’t it could lead to a mistake in your baking.
