What is niche marketing? A niche is typically considered to be a small space or notch, or a space or activity for which a person is best suited. Niche marketing can then be thought of as marketing within a well defined area within which a person or company is well fitted.

With Google’s dominance in the world of search engines it is important to have a site appear as close to the top of a page of search results as possible. When people submit words or phrases into a search engines looking for something like a product, service, or information, it unusual for them to look beyond the first page or so of search results. For most people the only reason to search beyond the first or second page is if nothing relevant is found on them.

It can be difficult to separate yourself from the crowd online. If for example you have a travel site, and use atravela and avacationa as keywords it is likely that your site will be virtually lost amongst the competition. It may not even be possible to find your site on Google without staying up all night looking. Placing high on or adominatinga Google’s listings is important and to do this it is crucial to establish a well defined niche, and use keywords appropriate to it. Once your niche is established you will begin to see that online marketing really does work.

Advertising a agreat vacationa anywhere is not going to be sufficient. However if you feature a vacation to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a special place in the Caribbean, or Washington’s San Juan Islands you are starting to move towards finding your niche. A niche in reality is a thing that you will know as much as or more then anyone else about.

Supply and demand play a key role here. Imagine the scenario in which Google and the Internet would have existed back at the time the hula hoop was invented. A few press releases by the inventor would have announced the product to the world. People would have turned to Google and typed in “hula hoop”. Guess what? All roads would lead to the inventor’s web site. He would have “dominated Google”. As it turns out he did quite well without the Internet’s help but you get the idea.

Whether you have a product or service to offer it has to be something that there is a demand for and not many suppliers of. It helps too if you know what you are talking about which you probably will if it’s your own product or service. High demand, limited competition, and your own credibility can add up to a dominant position in Google search.

Starting your own marketing business online may not be easy. In fact failure is likely unless you are able to find your niche early on. A good method to assist with finding a niche is to to use brainstorming. Make a list of all the marketing possibilities you can think of. Do not worry about the individual merits of each item on the list, just write down as many possibilities as you can. Then go through the list and examine the supply and demand possibilities for each item. Once something with high demand and limited competition is found, you are on your way to a successful niche marketing business.

Opportunities at times stare us in the face and we don’t even realize it. Just give some thought to what you have to offer to the world. It’s probably much, much more than you realize. Then look for the unique thing, that which other’s find interesting or important and market it. Sounds simple, but it takes work. Success isn’t guaranteed of course, not many things in life are, but with perseverance and maybe a little luck you can make your niche market work for you.
