Cerberus, urged (pressured? threatened?) by JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Citigroup Inc., which hold a lot of the debt from Cerberus’s purchase of Chrysler from Germany’s DaimlerChrysler AG in August 2007, is frantically trying to foist Chrysler upon GM. Cerberus is also in talks with Nissan Motor Co., Renault SA, and everybody else who listens. Insiders view these talks just as a side show make the prospective groom jealous and to lend more urgency to the wedding with GM. The Chrysler/GM marriage has been praised in the mainstream press as the savior of the U.S. auto industry, as a “win-win” situation full of “synergy” potential. These words rank big in the Dictionary of Corporate Bullshit – smart people head for the exit when these words are used. “Typical investors, and Cerberus is anything but typical, are running from the automotive industry,” meant Warren Feder , partner at Carl Marks Advisory Group LLC in New York, said. “It’s hard to see any upside with a degree of comfort, and you need that to make an equity investment.”

U.S.A.: Less than 11 million cars in 2009?

JPMorgan Chase & Co, who should have a vested (see above) interest in painting the picture of the auto industry in at least shades of rosy, just did the opposite. Himanshu Patel, an analyst at JPMorgan Chase & Co. wrote in a report on October 21, 2008 that U.S. auto deliveries could fall to an annual rate of 10 million vehicles this quarter and as low as 11 million next year. A few days before, J.D. Power and Associates still had estimated that 13.2 units would be sold in the U.S. for 2009. Patel’s 2009 estimate would be the lowest rate since 1982. The predictions get grislier by the day.

China may sell more cars in 2009 than the U.S.

If Patel is right (and, see above, his firm has a lot of hard earned insider knowledge about the auto business,) and if China maintains a ? by Chinese standards ? rather sedate growth rate , come 2009, the Chinese auto market might be the same size or even larger than the U.S. The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, had targeted 10 million units for 2008, but with growth slowing in China, the Eastern Empire may not quite make it this year. Next year, unless the sky will fall, 11 million are entirely doable.

In the meantime, according to Bloomberg, the exit of Kerkorian, Cerberus & Co. “may leave the U.S. auto industry without new funding just as sales head to a 26-year low.”

Now for a truly disturbing piece of data from someone who measures consumers in real-time. Eduardo Castro-Wright, President and CEO of Wal-Mart’s U.S. operations told attendees of a luncheon sponsored by Town Hall Los Angeles: “Most consumers are worried about: ‘Will I have enough to put food on the table so my family can eat?” When paychecks come in, his stores see spikes of sales of baby formula, “suggesting consumers are rushing to buy such necessities as soon as they have the cash,” Reuters reported. Reuters continued: “As the economy worsens, Wal-Mart’s customers have increasingly shown signs of living paycheck to paycheck. Wal-Mart’s sales typically surge around pay periods at the beginning and middle of the month. Castro-Wright said that spike has become more pronounced as consumers’ budgets become more stressed.”

Back to cars: A family that barely can feed their babies is unlikely to worry about a new ride. A Chinese milk mother can buy a new car for cash with three or 5 months earnings. While the International Breastfeeding Committee of WHO/Unicef recommends breastfeeding for six months, Chinese hospitals recommend a year or more. After a year’s of not really hard work, the milk mother will have two or three cars. Meanwhile, back in the U.S. of A. , parents need parts to keep their cars running, at least twice a month, for a trip to Wal-Mart.

In any case, “affiliate marketing” is one of the most often-searched-for keyword phrases entered into Google. There are, it seems, hundreds of thousands of would-be Internet marketers out there who want to know how to turn their time into gold by joining the affiliate marketing rush. Consequently there are hundreds of websites and “how to” books available nowadays on the subject. I’ll give you the basics briefly and you can then decide if this is something you may wish to delve into further.

The Basics

Basically, affiliate marketing means promoting a company’s products on the Web and then receiving a commission for sales of those products (or for some other result, such as getting them sales leads).

In the abstract it sounds like easy money. You set up a website, become an “affiliate” for a product that seems like it has a good market, then run ads for the product on your website. Then, whenever someone clicks on one of the ads and buys the product, you earn a commission. Simplicity itself.

Now, if you’re not too familiar with this way of making money on the Web, you’re probably wondering, “Okay, so how do I get to be an affiliate for some company’s product? And then once I’m an affiliate, where do I get the ads? And how do I get paid?”

Before I answer those questions let me share a dirty little secret about affiliate marketing with you. In the past many companies which offered affiliate programs never paid their affiliates, or, more commonly, underpaid them. Suppose you promoted XYZ Company’s widgets on your website and received $500 worth of orders in a month. The company has promised to pay you a 20% commission. So you should receive $100. Trouble is, nobody but the company really knew how much your sales were, in many cases. They might actually pay you $50, therefore, or nothing. You wouldn’t know you were being hoodwinked.

Fortunately, there’s now a straightforward way to avoid that problem, and this answers the questions posed above. You simply become an affiliate through an affiliate network like LinkShare or Commission Junction or Clickbank. These networks represent hundreds or thousands of companies. You select the companies on the network you want to promote and your commissions are tallied by the networks, not by the companies whose products you’re promoting. You get paid directly by the networks. In my opinion, this is a huge improvement – at least now you can be sure you’ll get paid for your efforts.

So the answer to the first question above, “How do I get to be an affiliate for some company’s product?” is that you join an affiliate network. This is actually pretty easy. Just go to LinkShare or Commission Junction – the two biggest – and sign up. You’ll need a website, however.

Once you’re been accepted by a network, you can then review their extensive lists of companies which offer affiliate programs through them. You’ll be looking for some good programs that offer products or services that will appeal to the visitors to your site. So for example, if your site is about automobiles, you might want to run ads for auto accessories, auto repair, auto insurance, etc.

You’ll notice that most companies’ affiliate programs pay you on1y for actual sales (i.e., $35 for selling a car insurance policy) whereas others pay you for leads (i.e., $15 for a potential customer filling out an application for a car insurance policy). Guess which of these two types of affiliate programs is more profitable. The answer is the latter is almost inevitably more profitable. So you should, initially at least, only promote programs in which you get paid for leads, not for actual sales.

The way it works is as follows: You pick one or more programs which appeal to you, then apply to become an affiliate of those programs. In most cases, you’ll get approved automatically. In other cases, you’ll receive an email later either accepting or rejecting your application. (The company may have a policy of not accepting “new” websites, or may not accept websites in certain fields, etc. — thus a possible rejection.)

After you’ve been accepted by a few affiliate programs, return to the affiliate network’s website (i.e., the site of Commission Junction or LinkShare) and copy the HTML code for the banner ads or other types of ads you’ll be putting on your site (this HTML will have a tracking code appended to it so that you’ll get paid your commissions).

Once you put these ads onto your website you’re in the affiliate marketing business. At this point it’s just a matter of waiting for some of your visitors to click on those ads and purchase the products or fill out the application forms. Every time this happens you get credited for the stated commission. The networks generally send out checks on a monthly basis.

Doesn’t this sound great or what?. Unfortunately… there are some serious problems.

Affiliate Marketing Usually Doesn’t Work

In spite of much breathless hype by marketing gurus, most people who try affiliate marketing never make a penny of profit. Why not?

One reason is that few website visitors click on banners anymore. We’re all pretty jaded when it comes to banners, in fact we seldom even look at them, and only in very rare instances do we actually click on them and buy something.

Then there’s the huge problem of getting substantial traffic to your website. In order for affiliate marketing to have any chance at all of working you need a lot of of good, targeted traffic. Today, that can be extremely difficult to achieve, because the Web has become a crowded place. No matter what the topic of your site is, there are probably thousands or hundreds of thousands of websites out there already on the same topic. Search engines like Google and Yahoo will index your site and then pretty much forget it exists. You’ll get only a dribble of traffic and few if any sales. In a word, much work and effort, little reward.

Beating the Odds

It’s quite amazing that, despite the tremendous odds, a few people have actually found ways to earn significant incomes from affiliate marketing.

One way they’ve done it has been by using pay-per-click advertising. Google Adwords is a prime example of this, although similar ad-serving systems are available through Yahoo, MSN, and others. In pay-per-click advertising, you purchase ads on search engine results pages – these ads are called “sponsored results” or something similar. You pay a set amount each time someone clicks on the ad – usually anywhere from $0.25 to a few dollars.

That can get expensive fast. If you are paying fifty cents for one click to your ad, that brings you one visitor to your website, who may or may not click on any of your affiliate ads. A hundred such clicks and Google has charged you $50 and you may have gotten zero sales or commissions.

Nonetheless, some people have made this work. One way is by only targeting narrow niches. Not “Canon Cameras” but “Canon Powershot Cameras,” for example, or even better “Cannon Powershot DSC 600.”

Although a very broad keyword phrase like “Canon Cameras,” or worse still, “cameras,” might have thousands of people placing bids on it, a narrow one like “Canon Powershot DSC 600″ might only have a very few – namely, people marketing that particular type of camera. Thus the “per click” cost might be much lower — and the “conversion rate” (the percentage of clicks converting to sales) much higher.

So by finding niches and by bidding on many keyword phrases, some people have done quite well and continue to do so.

Another trick is called “search marketing.” Search marketing simply means to place pay-per-click ads on search engine pages (i.e., “search results” pages). Then when somebody clicks on these ads they’re taken directly to the company’s website, not to yours.

To use the example above, you might put up an ad which takes the visitor straight to the Canon web page where he/she can immediately order the Canon Powershot DSC 600 camera, instead of forcing them to first go to your web site, then click a second time to get to the Canon order page.

Search marketing can be a profitable idea but it is beset with ferocious competition. A select group of people who are extremely good at writing ads and very focused and determined can make it work – it’s being done all the time. But the sad fact is most will just run up Google Adwords bills. If you’d like to look into this further, I suggest a book called Affiliate Millions by Greg Holden and Anthony Borelli (John Wiley & Sons). It spells out everything you need to know to have a fighting chance of becoming a successful search marketer.

Google Adsense as an Alternative

Focusing your efforts entirely on affiliate marketing can be a big gamble. But there’s a way to become an affiliate marketer as a lucrative sideline, and that’s Google Adsense. Assume you have a content website on skydiving and it gets a fair amount of traffic. You can then sign up for Google Adsense and Google will provide you with a snippet of HTML to place on all your pages which will serve targeted ads related to skydiving — for example, small plane flying instruction schools, parachutes, etc. Whenever anyone clicks on one of these ads, Google credits your account with a commission.

Adsense can be a good alternative to Adwords because with Adsense you don’t have to worry about choosing affiliate programs, bidding on keywords, or paying credit card bills for ads. Adsense chooses which ads to run on your site based on your content. Needless to say, if nobody clicks on any of your Adsense ads, you receive no commissions but then you pay no credit card bills either.

According to a recent USA TODAY article, with the headline “Google Search Ads Find Momentum,” a small number of people are cleaning up with Adsense. One website owner, Marc Ostrofsky, is quoted as saying, “I put up a website, add the Google ads, and wait for the money to start flying in.”

But that’s hard to believe. In reality, nobody puts up a website and gets money flying in – you have to generate traffic first. What’s more, Ostrofsky owns a company, iREIT.com, that manages thousands of sites, some of them high-traffic. For most of us, returns from Adsense will be modest but nevertheless welcome. As said, “affiliate marketing” is one of the most-searched-for keyword phrases on the Internet. Each and every day, untold thousands of people research this subject, hoping to find a way to supplement their incomes with a home-based business or, even better, make a million or a couple million and forget about holding a regular job.

Online businesses require just two things to ensure success. The first is content…good content. An adequate number of website visitors is the second…and the more the better. There are any number of ways to advertise and promote a website, including “plugging” it on social media sites. But, all traffic is not equal, and organic search traffic is the best of all.

That is, in part, because it is free. But, even more important is the fact that people who arrive at a website after conducting a search are more apt to take action than those who are brought in via an advertisement.

In other words, because these visitors have gone to the trouble of searching for information related to the websites on which they wind up, they are more likely to buy, donate, request further information, add themselves to a newsletter mailing list, etc.

That is why smart website owners spend significant time and money trying to earn high search engine ranking. And, since obtaining links is critical to achieving such rankings, they are all engaged in a link building campaign of one kind or another. Generally, article marketing is a part of their campaigns because few other activities can be counted on to generate as many links as quickly. In fact, a popular article can produce dozens of links almost immediately and hundreds of links within a few weeks.

Almost always, for fairly obvious reasons, people write articles about the same subjects which are the themes of their websites. It just makes good sense.

But, the biggest mistake website owners make, and they do it all the time, is to limit themselves to writing and distributing articles only about subjects closely related to their website content.

By writing on one topic or a very narrow range of topics, website owners limit their audience and the number of links their articles may produce. Any estimates or projections of earning would have to be part of the disclosure statement.

Here’s another one that I love. This really puts you in the shoes of unique and different people.

6) If I was so-and-so, how would I solve this problem?

Here are some examples: How would my mother solve this problem? How would my competitor solve this problem? The great thing about this question is it forces you to think from different perspectives.

These questions amongst others have opened up all kinds of opportunities for me, and they’ve been the oxygen – the lifeblood – of my career and the success that I’m experiencing.

Here is an example of how I used this creative questioning to overcome an obstacle early on in my career.

I decided to become a professional speaker as soon as I was done University. My focus was speaking to college and high school students about the topic of creativity. I focused on creativity because with it I was able to move from a first year failure in University to graduating being named Most Outstanding Male with straight A’s. I changed a lot between how I did things in first year to my last year, and I credit a lot of it to learning something I had become very passionate about, creative thinking.

Being a professional speaker and building a profitable speaking business was two things I didn’t know anything about though.

To try and learn the ropes I joined an organization called CAPS, The Canadian Association for Professional Speakers.

At one of my first meetings I attended I approached a gentleman there who was doing very well with his speaking career about what I needed to do to get to his level. He replied by saying. “It’s very simple, Stu. I’ll give you three things to do, once you have those finished, come back and I’ll give you some more.”

He said, “Number one, you need to join CAPS. You need to surround yourself with like-minded people, who are working in your industry and can help you grow.” I said, “Okay.”

To join CAPS the registration was $200, which was a big chunk of my budget. I remember even asking them if I could pay in smaller payments, which I did. Despite the squeeze, I joined the CAPS organization.

Then he said, “Number two, you have to get out to the CAPS National Conference.” And I thought, ‘Man, how in the heck am I going to get out there?’ It was on the complete opposite side of Canada. The seminar itself was relatively expensive. Anything for me, at that point, was expensive. I had no money. I had to pay for my flight and all that nonsense.

It was at this point that I knew I had to start asking myself some creative questions. I knew I didn’t have much, but I began looking at what I did have, or could do that perhaps someone else might be interested in.

One thing I that I had at that point was time itself. Because I had just started my speaking business I wasn’t speaking very often, so I knew I had some time I could offer.

I started to then rack my brain about how I could use that time to benefit someone else. By asking myself that question I came up with a campaign called, ‘Helt Stu Be Like You.’

But here was the concept and here’s what happened. I approached the biggest chapter of the CAPS organization in my province and I asked for 30 seconds in front of the whole group. There were about 75 of them.

This was something that nobody had ever asked for. While up there I said, “How many of you, at one point, started off as a speaker with no experience?” Of course everybody’s hands went up in the air.

“Awesome,” I said. “Keep your hand up if you have ever attended the CAPS national conference before.” Seventy-five percent of the group kept their hands up.

I continued, “With experiencing the national conference, how many of you with your hands up belief that it would be beneficial for somebody with zero experience to go to?” Everyone who had been kept their hands up.

“Great, I am someone who needs to get out to the CAPS national conference because I have zero speaking experience!”

I continued by saying, “But, here is where I run into difficulty. I don’t have any money, just time. Here is the exchange I am willing to make and I hope you are to. ‘Help Stu Be Like You’ is a campaign that I have created.” At this point I handed out a small flyer to everyone in the audience. It basically was a 8×6 black and white flyer that I had printed at home on 8-1/2 x 11 sheets and cut down the middle to save on costs.

I continued to explain what my campaign was about, “This is what I am willing to do. I will do everything you as speakers don’t like doing or don’t have the time to do. Whatever it is, licking stamps, calling clients, writing sales letters. If you need me to I will come to your house and cut your lawn. All I’m asking in return for my time is a financial contribution of your choice.”

I could see some of them in the audience were just licking their chops thinking, “Oh my goodness. This is awesome. I’m going to get cheap labor.”

I said, “I am willing to do whatever you don’t like doing in exchange for a financial contribution of your choice, all of which will go towards getting me out to the CAPS national conference.”

As soon as I finished explaining it, a gentleman at the back of the room stood up, and he said, “Stu, I will pay for your entrance fee to the seminar.” Boom. Just like that. Half of my costs basically taken care of.

Immediately following that, another gentleman stood up and he said, “Stu, and I will pay for the cost to get you out there.” Boom, boom. Eighty-five percent of all of my expenses were taken care of just like that.

That’s what being creative is about my friends.

By asking myself that creative question, I was able to come up with a solution that got me out to the conference and my entrance fee paid for. By the time I got there it had turned into a big story, the national CAPS publication had written a story about me and I had all kinds of people coming up to me asking me questions.

3) You mustn’t use words and sentences taken straight from the merchant’s sales page. Your review will lose all its impact if you do this. It will no longer be seen as impartial.

4) You’ll be a lot more convincing if you have actually used (and liked) the product. You’ll find that you can frequently get a copy of the product from the merchant without having to pay for it. Just tell the merchant that you want to write a review of it.

5) “Comparative reviews” are very powerful. Just find other products which satisfy the same sort of needs, and review them alongside the product you really want visitors to buy. A “star rating” system is a good idea in a comparative review. You will, of course, give the main product more stars than the others!

Do you normally seek out self-serving, traditional advertisements, or do you rely more upon the advice of friends and trusted acquaintances when making a buying decision? The answer is obvious.

Borrowing traffic usually will not cost you out of pocket cash, although normally you should be prepared to pay out of your proceeds.

The second basic fast-traffic method is to pay for advertising. You have many options available for paid advertising, and I’m going to recommend pay-per-click advertising. Let’s start with the question:

Can you actually charge for a teleseminar, or is it better to host it for free and then try to sell products on the call?

Free calls are great but I like charging as well. I am going to throw a couple of things out there for you to think about.

Even though you will get more people on your call when you do it for free, the people will be less qualified. When someone has paid for the call they are a better prospect to sell your other products and services to rather than someone who is just listening because it is free. That is what I mean by less qualified.

There a variety of different ways in which you can promote a call. One way that I use a lot is the actual call is free but then up sell people immediately to purchase the mp3 and transcripts of the call. The mp3 and transcripts are not free because I want to establish value for them in the future, one way of doing this is selling them. The method I use to get them to buy the mp3 and transcripts is to do a registration offer. Basically as soon as they register they are offered something that may this, “Congratulations on completing the registration for this call. There is a special offer for you right now, would you like to take advantage of getting the mp3 and transcripts for this call for $10?”

In a nut shell that is my up sell process. They have the opportunity to purchase the mp3 and transcripts for $10 and I let them know that after the call they will be sold for $47, or whatever price you want to sell them for. For them, it is a great deal to begin with and will save them a lot of money by buying it right away. For me, it gives me the opportunity to gather people for a more qualified list.

By doing this, I am able to address both markets at the same time. For the freebie seekers they are able to receive valuable content for free by joining me on the call. The kicker is that they have to make the point of being there on the call in order to listen to the content or they will miss it.

Then I am also building a sub list of more qualified people who are willing to take their credit card out of their wallet and invest in the materials that I have even though it is only $10. I do that for a reason because I do not want it make a huge hurdle. I want to capture those people right away just so that I have identified who they are and at the same time I have established value for the mp3 and the transcripts. I am training people to know that the mp3 and the transcripts are something of value that they need to pay for. It is not free.

Giving everything away for free is not something I like to do because your whole back end sales won’t be helped by doing that. Qualifying people and establishing value is another goal of mine and this method as worked well for me to do both. By providing the actual call for free you will still get those people who are looking for freebies and be able to show them how much valuable your information can be. You also will be able to secure those qualified people who purchase the mp3 and transcripts during the up sell process. Offer them a deal at the time of registration for a much lower price, like $10. Also make sure you let them know that after the call that price will be increase dramatically to $47, $97, whatever price you decide upon.

That sub list of qualified prospects have shown you that they are willing to pull out their credit cards, so you will be able to follow up a lot harder than the people who just opted for the free call. From there you can sell other higher priced products and services.

Doing a teleseminar you have the opportunity to both charge for the call and give it away for free and get qualified buyers another way. Think about what you want to accomplish for the call and the type of market you might have if you are charging for it.

9. Does the company offering you this franchise have a reputation for honesty and fair dealing among its franchisees?

10. Has the franchisor shown any certified figures indicating exact net profits of one or more of its members, and have you personally checked the figures with these people?

11. Will the franchisor assist you with: a) A management training program; b) An employee training program; c) A public relations and advertising program; d) Capital; e) Credit; f) Merchandising ideas?

12. If needed, will the franchisor assist you in finding a suitable location?

13. Is the franchising firm adequately financed so that it can carry out its sated plans?

14. Does the franchisor have experienced management, trained in depth?

15. Exactly what can the franchisor do for you that you cannot do for yourself? 16. Has the franchisor investigated you carefully enough to assure itself that you can successfully operate a profit to both of you?

Then with your borrowed $400, you go to another bank, open up an savings account, return a few days later, borrow $400 from that bank using your passbook account as collateral. Then repeat the process at a third bank with your borrowed $400 from the bank using your passbook account as collateral. Wait a few days and go to a fourth bank where you open this time a CHECKING account. Wait a few days and make a payment on each of the other three loans. A week later, make payments again on the three loans, and continue paying each week until you have almost paid off the balance. A credit invitation at this point will show you with three active bank loans (which are considered hard to get), a checking account, and paying history for the three bank loans–with you having paid up in advance. Thus, you have a AAA credit in a little as 30 days. From here you go on to apply for credit cards, and other items on credit.

GET ANY CREDIT CARD YOU WANT. You should have no problem getting any credit card you want if you follow the above procedure first. But, there are a few rules to follow to insure you have no difficulties in obtaining your cards: 1) Apply for department store cards first. Purchase something and pay the balance when due; 2) apply for a gasoline credit cards listing your department store cards as references; 3) Apply for bank cards–Master Charge and Visa; 4) Apply for Travel and Entertainment cards–American Express, Diners Club, etc.

Lately I’ve seen an ad on TV where people are carrying around a big orange number. The idea is that this number is the amount of money that person needs to save so he or she can retire comfortably. The ad generated a strange response in me – one of anger – and I wasn’t exactly sure why.

Then I came up with the reason. I was feeling depressed and anxious, not exactly mad. Which is probably why they created the ad campaign in the first place. Research has shown that the best kind of advertising is that which makes you feel desperate and stressed. Negative advertising. Needless to say, it worked for me. But when they did give their solution, it didn’t really work for me.

Their solution is to sign up with them and they’ll help you save and invest properly to end up at the “magic number”. That might work for someone just entering the workforce, or even someone in their thirties, but I’m 52 years old. I have very little savings, and in my opinion not a lot of hope to increase that to the one or two million dollars that most of those numbers in the ad represented, even if I hired the best financial mind in the world to help me make decisions.

What are people my age supposed to do? I’ve decided that I’m going to generate multiple streams of income coming into my bank account every month for the rest of my life. Furthermore, I think this is a great solution for most baby boomers. How do we really know what that number is, anyway, with the rising cost of gas and the decreasing value of real estate. These are uncertain times. So how do we generate those multiple streams? Here are a few ideas.

1. A reverse mortgage on your residence. If your house is paid off or mostly paid off, you can borrow against the equity in order to get monthly payments, get a lump sum, or just have the money available as a line of credit.

2. You could get a job. Maybe all you’ll need is a little extra to supplement your pension, savings, and social security. A part-time job might fit the bill to help you stay afloat.

3. You can purchase a franchise. There are all kinds of businesses out there if you’re willing to put up the capital to get started. Some are very expensive, and some aren’t. Do some research, this might be a great option.

4. Start a traditional home business. Maybe there is something you’re good at and you can market that skill. It can be building something, making something, or even offering a service, such as bookkeeping. You can sell your product or service on Craig’s List or ebay.

5. An internet-based business. There are tons of merchants who pay affiliates to promote their products and then pay a commission on any sales that are made from those promotions. You don’t need to have and inventory, you don’t even talk to the customer, you just send them to the merchants website. This is a good option, because it frees up your time as it’s residual income that keeps coming in month after month.

6. A network marketing business. This is my top choice for the simple reason that it offers both leveraged incom and residual income. Leveraged income means that you sign up distributors underneath you, and you are paid a small part of any sales they generate for the company. Residual income is accomplished by setting up customers that continue to buy your companies products on a month-to-month basis, and you earn commission on every purchase they make.

These are just a few suggestions on how baby boomers can retire with a good income. I encourage you to do some research, and figure out what works for you.

The HVAC industry grew up on personal relationships between wholesalers and contractors. Now, converting these familiar relationships into real business partnerships is a goal of many wholesalers, Why? Because wholesalers want secure revenue stream that result from contractors’ business loyalty. Wholesalers know contractors are increasingly willing to work with those who make business easier and walk from those who don’t.

Today, times are hard for HVAC contractors. New companies are entering the market and taking business from existing players. The labor pool for qualified staff has tightened. As parts and equipment become increasingly sophisticated, purchasing and training have become more complicated. Not least of all, contractor margins are dropping. Contractors know that the wholesalers who help them will be able to give these contractors a competitive advantage.

So how can wholesalers create a business partnership? Ironically, it’s through SERVICE, from telephone etiquette to honoring a delivery commitment. Excellent service translates into trust. Trust leads to an ongoing business partnership and revenues. Service – it’s the new name of the game.

Here are 10 ways wholesaler organizations can use service to become better business partners with contractors. Some are common-sense ideas, while others point to the wave of the future.

#10 Offer an online warranty program Several manufacturers and some wholesalers do this already. Wholesalers, with the right planning and foresight, could adopt expanded programs. Wholesalers would allow contractors (even if availability were limited to the best contractors) to identify and record faulty items online and automatically receive a credit on their wholesaler accounts up to a certain limit. The wholesaler would pass this amount back directly to the manufacturer. The contractor would take responsibility for discarding the items immediately. No questions asked. No need to mail the parts to the manufacturer. This program would save time and money, and create goodwill.

One large commercial and residential contractor, Hutchinson Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling, Inc. of New Jersey, is working directly with a manufacturer on a warrantee program, piling the malfunctioning parts in a high heap before disposal. This contractor would seriously consider sending business to a wholesaler who offered a similar program.

#9 Handle customer phone calls with respect. Phone interactions between a wholesaler and a contractor are critical and are indicative of how the two organizations will work together down the road. Some key guidelines for the wholesaler include: a.) show enthusiasm and interest in the contractor’s concerns – even to the little guy; b.) answer the phone call quickly, within six rings; c.) transfer callers no more than twice, and ask permission before doing so; d.) if you absolutely must put contractors on hold, do so no more than once, again asking permission; e.) return calls within 2 hours. One Philadelphia-area mechanical contractor, Industrial Valley Service, Inc. returns calls immediately upon receipt of the message. This contractor attributes their business success in part to this practice. Wholesalers may want to adopt this approach and evaluate it themselves.

Once a contractor begins the sales process with the wholesaler, try to keep the same representative working with the contractor throughout the estimating and purchasing process. This is not always possible. However, it makes for a stronger relationship that will affect future business. An obvious mistake that some wholesalers make is they don’t live up to their time commitments. If the wholesaler promises to get estimates by 4:30 p.m., he or she must do so.

Contractors like to start the estimating and purchasing process via phone, but they need to have something in writing, so fax is the preferred method of receiving the prices. Wholesalers must send the fax within the promised time frame. One small residential contractor complained that many wholesalers do not deliver estimates as promised. This has promoted him to change companies.

Sometimes a contractor may need a price immediately via phone for an urgent job. If the wholesaler has committed immediate turnaround, it’s incumbent upon him or her to deliver estimates immediately.

Large contractors prefer to be connected directly with the sales staff, from whom they feel they receive better treatment. They don’t mind automatic answering devises; believe their messages are more accurately captured on an answering machine than when transcribed by an assistant. Smaller contractors prefer a direct connection to the counter. They view the counter staff as more knowledgeable about products and prices, and more concerned about them. Smaller contactors vehemently dislike the automatic answering devises and may take their business elsewhere.

#8 Take advantage of the Internet The web is an excellent way to present information on products and prices, as well as on upcoming products and new services.

One contractor called the internet “perfect for replacing those huge catalogs.” It allows for quick updates of new pricing and product lines. Contractors can review the information off-hours. Once the Web site is up and running, it frees wholesaler staff from providing the same information via phone or fax. One caveat: The Internet site must be easy to use, especially for smaller contractor who may not be computer-savvy. Wholesalers who are installing a Web site for the first time should ask some of their customers to try it our first. Jerry McGinnis, the owner of Southampton, NJ based McGinnis HVAC, said if a wholesaler’s Web site was confusing, he wouldn’t use it and would consider leaving the wholesaler if he was forced to go there for pricing and product information.

Hutchinson sees other benefits in addition to product and pricing information in Web sites. This contractor has downloaded engineering guidelines, technical guides, and has used the Web site for troubleshooting. Another contractor downloaded a complete service manual from a Web site, after registering the model and serial number of the equipment he was researching.

A serious consideration before launching a Web site, however, is how frequently the wholesaler will maintain it. You minimize the benefits of the site if the information is outdated. Industrial Valley Service uses Web sites to learn ballpark prices but always confirms with a phone call. They have seen situations where no one bothered to update prices.

Great as Web sites might be, some less computer-savvy contractors may still need help. Wholesaler staff should be knowledgeable about their manufacturers’ and their own sites to direct contractors who call them via phone to the right Web site location.

#7 Introduce new products and product upgrades. A great way for the wholesaler to gain more business is to introduce the contractor to new products and product upgrades that serve his market. Contractors want to know about new developments and welcome this kind of input from wholesalers.

However, this requires the wholesaler to know something about the contractors they service to ensure genuine and relevant advice. This kind of communications is truly a win-win. Wholesalers may gain more business and longer business relationships. Contractors are aware of products they previously had not known of.

Industrial Valley Service says they often receive sample parts, perhaps costing the wholesaler $50. Because the wholesaler knows Industrial Valley Service business, he knows which parts fit Industrial Valley Service’s business needs. In fact, the contractor has responded to such free distributing by buying multiple new products.

There are many ways wholesalers can introduce new services and upgrades to their contractors: communication on the phone, free samples, coupons for redemption, etc.

Those wholesalers that don’t try to upgrade their contractors will be missing out on potential business.

# 6 Offer appropriate credit lines and recognize contractors who pay on time. Contractors spread their purchasing power among several (sometimes many) wholesalers, even if they favor one or two, in order to establish and maintain the credit lines, ensure the best prices, and retain purchasing power.

Of course, wholesalers provide credit lines. Certain contractors are fastidious about paying off their depts. McGinnis said he saw a direct correlation in the service and attention he received, and the regularity with which he paid his outstanding balance. He then sold a large piece of business and needed a much larger credit limit. He talked directly to the accounts receivable folks at his wholesaler, who within 20 minutes offered him a credit limit three times his own limit for this specific new job. He therefore had two credit lines with the wholesaler. The contractor was delighted at his new purchasing power. Likewise, the wholesaler had established a critical link between the contractor and himself by offering the credit line. Once again, it was a win-win situation.

# 5 Avoid hidden costs, such as freight and shipping- especially for small contractors. If respect and trust are keys to keeping long-term customers, make it a point to tell contractors upfront about costs they will incur but are not necessarily the cost of the product. One contractor made a special order without knowing there was a $75 dollar special order charge. The wholesaler failed to quote this charge when he estimated total expenses. Therefore he did not include it in the price to the customer. In the end, this contractor had to pay the $75 and absorb it from his own profit margin.

# 4 Provide training. Contractors say a wholesaler who provides training world be difficult not to do business with. Most say with the increasing sophistication of HVAC products, training on the electronic parts is an essential ingredient of staying in business.

Hutchinson Plumbing, Heating, and Cooling in fact said today’s workforce expect to be trained especially given the equipment sophistication and growth in electronic parts. Hutchinson invites manufacturers to its site for workforce training. But they’d send staff to wholesaler-sponsored training in an instant. Providing training demonstrates a wholesaler’s willingness to be a business partner and shows expertise in the industry.

One hint: Manufacturers would like a printed training calendar in advance. Wholesalers might want to schedule training during nonpeak periods when contractors are least reluctant to let staff attend the session.

# 3 Don’t commit to what you can’t deliver. If a wholesaler doesn’t carry a part, doesn’t have one in stock, or can’t get one overnight, the wholesaler should not commit to delivering the order. Industrial Valley Service says one of its most loyal wholesalers will occasionally suggest another wholesaler who stocks an item when it isn’t able to deliver. For Industrial Valley Service, that means getting the part on time, without the hassle of trying to find another distributor themselves. Instead of losing Industrial Valley Service as a customer, the loyal wholesaler has earned Industrial Valley Service’s respect. Being confident in the materials he does carry and in the service he offers, the loyal wholesaler is happy to help his contractors find other sources on the occasions he cannot help them.

# 2 Deliver accurately and on time. Without exception, this is the single biggest reason a contractor will stay with a wholesaler. Contractors count on receiving a delivery as ordered. They coordinate the people, machinery, temporaries, etc. to do a job at a designated time. Since labor is the biggest variable in a job, if the parts aren’t there, the contractor’s money is wasted.

And partial shipments aren’t enough. Contractors expect to receive the full shipment on time. Wholesalers who know there will not be a full shipment should call the contractor, even late the night before, to advise them of the problem. Most contractors would rather receive this late-night phone notice than find out the next morning.

For incomplete deliveries, wholesalers should provide corrective action. One contractor said that his wholesaler purchased parts at higher prices from other wholesalers or distributors to make the delivery complete. Hutchinson’s residential division uses a distributor whose motto is “we’ll never cause a missed real estate closing” because of parts not being there. This wholesaler will deliver upgraded materials before causing the cancellation of a new home closing.

Hutchinson, who is a bigger than some of the distributors and wholesalers they use, has a warehouse that for certain parts serves as the delivery point. A staff member checks the deliveries received and assembles the parts for the next several days’ jobs. This way, there is less likelihood of a shortage of parts.

One contractor said when the wholesaler doesn’t deliver; it’s the contractor who wears the black eye, the one staying up until midnight trying to rectify the situation. The first thing you will need to do is set up your download page. You will need the URL of this page in setting up the payment button. This the URL that your customers will be sent to after a successful payment has been made.

Now you need to log into your PayPal account. After you log-in look for Merchant Tools. Open Merchant Tools and this opens up to you some options. These options are: Shopping Cart, Buy Now Buttons, and Subscriptions and recurring Payments.

You would choose the shopping cart if your site had a number of products available. The customer can pick and choose as you would in a super market. After choosing the items wanted the customer finalizes their sale by going to checkout and paying for the items in the cart.

If your page is just selling one item and it is a one-time sale you would choose the buy now button. Having your page focus on just one item can be an advantage to selling. When the customer clicks on the buy now button they are taken directly to PayPal to complete the purchase.

As is the case with buy now button, the subscription and recurring payments button is for just one item. Payments continue to be made at intervals specified by you. These can be weekly, monthly, yearly or any period you specify. This payment system also allows for a trial period and then the payments at the specified intervals.

When you have chosen which system to use and have filled in all the details, PayPal produces a script code you can install into your sales page, where you want the button to appear.

Using a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) HTML editor, scroll down the page to where you want the button to appear. Now click your mouse here so that the cursor is blinking where the button is to appear. Create a table. Click your mouse inside the table, and change the view to code view. You should now see the cursor blinking in the code. Make sure you have copied the PayPal code to the clipboard of the computer. Click on “Edit” and then “Paste”. This will insert the PayPal code into your page. If you need to center it just use center as you would text.

Now go to browser view and check how it will look on line.

That’s it! You are now able to receive payments on your site.

Many Christians stretch scripture a bit and feel they must deal with a Christian organization. The part that is absurd; these organizations do not discriminate against any religious beliefs. This fact is quite curious, so why choose to state they are a Christian company.

The reality is that Christian debt consolidation companies are very similar to Non-Christian companies. There is a kind of inbound link that the search engines use to decide that your site is worth putting at the top of a search result. Links to your site from relevant, respected websites are a way to hit search engine gold.

You can build up your inbound link count by approaching website owners and asking for a link, or by sending them articles (with a link to your site) that would be interesting to their audiences. But before you do, here’s a list of what to look for.

Great inbound links…

- Come from relevant sites. If your site is about golfing, don’t go after a link from a site that sells hockey sticks.

- Look natural. If people were linking to your website randomly, they wouldn’t all use the same anchor text, and they wouldn’t all link to you in the same week. So when you give out the links you want people to use, vary the anchor text and build them up gradually over time.

- Aren’t lost among dozens of other links. You don’t want the page your link is on to have more than two dozen outbound links… the fewer the better (unless the link is from a directory).

- Are placed in a good position on the site. Negotiate to get your link embedded in a natural position — usually within some text in the main body area. The search engines can discredit links found in the footer, right-hand side, or other popular areas where advertising usually goes.

Don’t worry about getting your link on their homepage. Deep links within a strong complementary website are great.

- Are found on sites that are indexed regularly. Check the Google cache date of the page the link would come from and make sure it’s recent.

- Are on sites that have been around for a while. Older sites are more credible

- Are on sites with high Google PageRank. Links from high PageRank sites, will get you higher rankings in search listings. However, if you find a website that would be a great partner but the PageRank is 3 or lower, they are still worthwhile

Inbound links are one of the most powerful strategies for getting high rankings in the search results. It’s worth spending time on this.

Submitting articles are a very powerful form of advertisng for your websites. Beyond getting the articles read, something far more valuable can come from them. It is known as the backlink.

The power of article submitting comes from the sheer number of copies that are able to be published online. The number can reach in the hundreds of backlinks from just one article. That being said, the format is vital.

Google is no dummy and most of the other search engines follow their site these days. Google will filter most of the articles from the hundreds of directories unless you can diversify your article. The way to do this is to rewrite it.

Article spinning is probably one of the hardest things to pull off. Most of the software for this purpose is useless. The right way is to rewrite your articles by hand.

By submitting the same article to hundreds of dirctories, will get you many backlinks. If its the asame article however, Google will eventually filter out all of those links and article instances from their search results.

You can rewrite your article though in different words. Use different backlinks in the resource box. Use different titles and different authors.

Diversify each article you write as much as humanly possible. There are submission services out there who can take these version and randomly distribute them to thousands of directories.

Although you will probably not end up with hundreds of backlink credits per article, it is possible to recieve fifty or so.

Multiply this by ten or twewnty articles and your website can achieve many page one rankings. The key is to mix and match the content of your articles as much as possible. The more diverse the better.

Also, do NOT focus on just one backlink to market for. Google will pick up on this and further filter your links. Try to come up with a minimum of ten to twenty hyperlink text phrases for each of your websites.

Choose a domain name that is a keyword search phrase for your website. If you can get a dot com extension, it will be relatively easy to get a page one, number one ranking.

This ofcourse is contingent upon how your website is built. Make sure it is properly optimized and isn’t cross linked to other websites on your server.

Backlinks are vital to a websites success. They are more important than avoiding duplicate content. Duplicate content can really only kill you if it is on different websites that are on the same server.
