Indeed, all the young people studied (aged 9 to 15) ate more when they were with friends than strangers regardless of their size. But it was when the heavier friends teamed up that the most calories were consumed. Clinical nutritionists were interested in this research. The most revealing dynamic it discovered was the influence of friends.

Frankly, having more relaxed habits when with friends is not a big surprise. We all feel more awkward in strange company. With friends, we gain a sort of unspoken permission for our actions. In a subconscious way, we permit them to define tolerable behaviour.

Over 60 kids and teens of all sizes were reviewed for three quarters of an hour. Some were put with a person they knew well, and some with an unfamiliar person. Every couple had things to play with and food to eat.

The familiar couples put away more food than the unfamiliar ones. But the overweight pairs who were familiar with each other got through the most. And the variations were considerable, as shown below.

The heavier friends together consumed an average of almost 750 cals each. Heavy kids with standard weight chums ate just under 450 cals, and standard weight kids ate approx 500 cals whatever weight their mate was. Similar ‘friendly’ peer pressure is also evident when kids decide whether to start smoking.

Back to the eating patterns – and the researchers concluded that the way children eat is very much tied into the habits of their friends. But this can be argued both ways – if a young person is taught sound nutrition and puts it into practice, they could be instrumental in influencing many others. What better reason for more nutritional training in schools?

My weight has gone up and down all my married life. And I figured that as I approached my fifties, things would only get worse. But I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be that way! I’m past fifty now, and no longer need to lose any weight.

My ’secret’ is keeping my blood sugar levels stable. Around 4pm, I used to get a sap in energy and I’d get a longing for food. And so I’d munch on a chocolate bar for an instant pick-me-up. This then just added to the increasing store of fat around my middle!

What’s also quite daunting is how much fat was additionally mounting up in my arteries, heart and even my brain. But now my blood-sugar remains level, and I don’t get the lows in energy and hunger. And it’s not just the blood sugars that have levelled out – I don’t break out into a menopausal sweat nearly as often. But the best thing for me is enjoying a great night’s sleep.

The ’secret’ is to eat every couple of hours, but just don’t eat much. Before, I’d skip breakfast or maybe lunch quite regularly, claiming I was just too busy to stop and eat. I’d then stuff myself at dinner, and end up uncomfortable all evening.

I ought to have been taking in modest sized ‘meals’ several times a day. Our metabolic rate peaks around the middle of the day, and slows down rapidly after that. Our important meals then are those eaten before the end of the afternoon – later ones have a tendency to be laid down as fat.

Sitting down to have breakfast is now top of my list every morning. I only eat a small amount, which saves me having to tot up the calorific value. (Our stomachs are not massive empty containers – we should be aware not to overstretch them).

Lunch is now usually my main meal. I try to restrict pasta, rice and wheat. I still enjoy a bite of something around 4pm, but it’s now light and nutritious as the cravings have gone. I eat protein with every meal, and go for as many colourful vegetables as I can find (as they contain the most antioxidants).

I haven’t cut out fat, though I’m fussy what fats I eat. Nuts and seeds are highly calorific, but great eaten in moderation.

Finally my weight has gone down because my alcohol consumption has gone down – I now just drink a glass of dry white wine a couple of times a week. Instead of wine and beer I drink iced tea and mineral water, which is very refreshing. Has it been hard, after all these years? It’s been a lot easier than I imagined actually. Not only has my weight dropped a couple of dress sizes, but I’m more energetic than I’ve been for years!

If we get too hungry before a meal it’s harder to restrict what we eat as well as how much.

When thinking about the changes we’d like to make in our lives, we usually have a picture of what that change looks like. We may visualise great trips away, having a large family home, a luxury car and perhaps a well respected position. Then we envisioned ourselves in cool summer clothes, looking great as we enjoyed trips to the beach. Everyone approved of our good looks. Oh how things changed!

Subsequently we’re both well on our way to our target weights – not stick thin, but happy! And Katie has a spring in her step (and a twinkle in her eye) that I hadn’t seen in years!

Our BMI, or Body Mass Index is an indication of whether we are overweight or not. Our weight is thought to be right for our height if our reading is under twenty five and over eighteen. We have weight management problems if our figure is any higher than that. A BMI of more than 30 is considered obese. It becomes morbidly obese when the index goes over 40.

Calculate your personal body mass index with the following sum – Use a metric rule to measure your height. Then record your weight in kilograms. Your index is your height squared, divided by your weight.

Any slimming regime that only allows one and a half thousand calories a day is considered a crash diet. To juice up the news, Bloomberg said that “China’s expansion was the weakest since the severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, epidemic slashed growth in the second quarter of 2003.”

To old China hands, this conjures up some of the worst memories, when China came to a grinding halt for months, while everybody had to stay home and was allowed to go to the shop once a week with guns pointed at you, worn by soldiers in HAZMAT gear. Can’t get any worse than that.

Business folk all over the world would give their left eye or even more sensitive parts for 9% growth. Correction: A 9% rise of GDP could scare the rest of the world into believing that central bankers would raise interest rates to prevent more inflation.

In reality, China simply goes from an inflationary, unsustainable, and unhealthy double digit growth to a solid level everybody would love.

Of course, export growth in China slowed. It was meant to slow. Since the second half of 2007, the Chinese government tried everything to bring exports to more sustainable levels.

- Retail sales in China rose 23.2 percent in September from a year earlier, matching the gain in August and close to the fastest pace in at least nine years.

- Urban disposable incomes for the first nine months of 2008 rose 14.7 percent from a year earlier. Rural cash incomes climbed 19.6 percent. People have more money and spend it.

- The formerly red-hot Chinese light vehicle market (which includes passenger vehicle and light commercial vehicle segments) is expected to slow in 2008, but it still will grow at very healthy rates. J.D. Power expects Chinese light vehicle sales to come in at 8.9 million units in 2008, which would be an increase of 9.7 % compared to 2007.

- Much of the decline in exports had its cause in the appreciation of the RMB. That was actually a reflection of the rapid depreciation of the USD which took place until July 2008. Have a look at the chart. Until July, the Yuan pretty much appreciated against the USD as the Euro did. The Dollar went down, the Euro and the Yuan went up.

But what happened when the USD started rising, starting in July? The USD/CNY rate barely budged. The EUR/CNY rate did move.

Bloomberg said that the Chinese “central bank has stalled gains by the Yuan against the Dollar since mid-July, protecting jobs in export industries.”

Not true. The chart says they did just the opposite. The Yuan should have gone down sharply against the USD along with the other currencies. However, the Yuan barely moved.

The chart says that the Chinese central bank may have propped up the Yuan against the US Dollar. China also took other measures to cool down their overheating export machine, such as not refunding parts of the VAT for exports, and actually charging export tax on certain items.

Yuan due to go down.

Expect the USD/CNY rate to change radically within the next months, latest after the U.S. elections. We expect the Yuan to drop against the USD, the easiest way for the Chinese government to make Chinese exports more attractive. In the first half of 2008, this would have been a rather unpopular move. But now, the world has other problems than watching the CNY/USD currency pair. If anyone does complain, the obvious explanation is that in light of the strength of the Dollar, the Yuan must follow suit and go down.

And when the USD will drop, as it should when America cranks up the presses to print money to finance the bailout and two wars, the Chinese can keep the USD/CNY level, and make their goods even cheaper in Euro terms.
