If my site has a PR 2 or more, which most do, I can add a page, get it near the top of Google within 3 days. Links can be gathered using many different methods and some are worth more than others. One of the least effective ways of building links is reciprocal linking which is where two sites simply exchange links with one another. This method was effective once upon a time but its day has been and gone now.

The reason that these links aren’t worth a great deal anymore is because what search engines like Google like to see is links building naturally as more and more people find your site, but if sites are both linking to each other, then the search engine can see that an arrangement has taken place to try to gain links faster, and therefore the links aren’t natural.

They are however worth something, just not a great deal. The reason they’re still worth something is because sometimes it would be natural for websites to simply link directly to and from each other, like in the case of a shop and their supplier or other situations where the pages have similar themes. Thats really the only time that reciprocal links are worth anything, when the pages are based on similar themes.

One way links are therefore the links that are preferred method, but you will still have to give people something in return for them to give you a link without you linking back. And so 3 way links were born, but in order to make 3 way links work, either you, or the person you’re linking with has to have two sites.

The 3 way link model is essentially this: site a places a link to site b, site b then places a link to site c, and if you want to, site c can then link back to site a. This method creates unprompted one way links in the eyes of the search engines that appear completely natural, and therefore will be more valuable.

For example, say you owned site A and site C and you wanted to get a link for site C, you would simply use site A as somewhere to offer a link from and in exchange, the other person would link to site C, meaning that their site becomes site B in the model. This strategy will do you far more favours than reciprocal linking, but when used alone you will probably make fairly slow progress, however when you use it alongside some other methods (which I will go into in my next article) it is highly effective.

If doing business on the Internet, you can find plenty of tools that can help you validate your code, evaluate on page factors, determine the speed of your website, help you submit to search engines, and develop in-bound links. Chance are, if you want a single tool that can do all of these things, it wont be free. But as I like to say, time is money.

It is no secret that in order to get your website ranked highly in the results pages of search engines like Google, you need to have links pointing at your site, and lots of them. But some links are worth more than others. You can be ranked above a site that has 20,000 links with 3000 if yours are of a better quality.

When calculating how much a link from a given site will be worth, there are several factors that count but you can more or less boil it down the Google Page Rank of the site/page you will be receiving the link from.

Basically, Google ranks every page it comes across (not straight away, they review it every 6 months or so) from zero to ten. Zero being the lowest, and ten of course being the highest. There are pages that Google doesn’t rank that will have Page Rank (PR) n/a, this will most likely mean that Google has not found that page yet, or it is an insignificant page deep within a site, or it could mean that Google doesn’t like that site and could have blacklisted it. You will very rarely see a PR 10 site (apart from google.com) as there are only about 8 in the world.

So what does it mean to have a good page rank? Well, a link from a PR 7 page will be considerably more beneficial to your ranking in the search engine results than one from a PR 2. PR is essentially how useful, genuine, important and valuable Google deems a page/site to be, and so if a PR 7 or 8 site is linking to you, and each link pretty much counts as a vote of quality, then Google can conclude that your site is of high importance and quality and will reward you by putting you higher in the rankings for your chosen keywords.

Having a high PR page does not directly benefit you, but it does mean that you will be in a position to offer better quality links out to other sites, and so you can then request high quality links back. So the higher your PR, the better chance you’ve got of being ranked highly, but only if you do the work to get the links, it wont do anything on its own.

The catch 22 of the whole PR game is that in order to get good PR, the main thing you need, is high quality links, but until you have a high PR page yourself, other high PR sites will be unwilling to link to you, and so that’s where you have to apply a bit of knowledge.

A good method to start off with is to find some sites that are in the same position as yourself (with related themes to yours if possible, but I wouldn’t worry too much about that) i.e. they are looking to build some PR by getting lots of links, and exchange links with these sites. Then (provided these sites have kept their efforts up) in 6 months to a years time, these sites will have some PR, and will still be linking to you, therefore you will have some PR by then, making these initial link exchanges mutually beneficial.

There are several other criteria that Google considers when scoring you PR but nobody knows exactly what they are because this is part of what Google keeps a secret. But we do know that Google gives priority to sites that are updated regularly with new content over sites that are left for a long time.

The reason for this is that if the content on a site stays the same for a year, then Google sees it as old information that isn’t necessarily relevant any more. Google wants to provide its searchers with the best, most relevant and up to date information as to what they are looking for. If you always bear this in mind then you should end up with a high PR site.

In a perfect world, we’d all have lots of links from the home-pages PR-10 sites, however the fact that there are only around 10 PR-10 sites that exist somewhat hinders this approach, and those 10 or so won’t usually link to many other websites because they don’t need to, have nothing to gain from it, and would never stop receiving link requests. Even slightly lower PR sites, like PR-7/8s are very picky about who they link to. These highly ranked sites are known as “authority” sites and tend not to link to lower ranked sites (not very often anyway) because they simply have nothing to gain from it.

Your mission is to get as many sites with some PR or the potential to soon get some PR to link to you as possible. This means in effect that getting a link from a newish site that hasn’t been live long, has no PR but is working on link building is a good strategy to adopt in the longer term. Google only allocated PR twice per year, so if you are unlucky you might need to wait months in order to gain some PR. The amount you are given will depend upon the link juice you squeeze from all the sites that link to you. The more, high pr sites you receive a link from, the higher your PR will ultimately be.

So how does one go about getting these links together? Well, that is just the question. You can hunt down sites online that seem to link to other sites. There are quite a few sites about that provide reciprocal linking. The flaw with these is that reciprocal links aren’t really worth a great deal any more (although they are worth something as sometimes two-way links are natural eg.customer & supplier etc.they’re just not worth much). This is because the major search engines have cottoned on to the arrangement being made between sites with this type of link, they have therefore begun to downgrade their worth.

The most effective way to get to the top of the search engines is through one way linking, or to put it another way, getting good websites to link to you without you linking back to them. This, as you can imagine, is not easy. Why would a quality site link to you anyway? Some might actually like your website, service or information and link to it as a reference for their own visitors, but in the main they will want something in exchange for the link.

You may have some difficulty with this if you only have one website, or if you have two that are hosted in the same place, they’ll have the same IP address and so it will look to search engines as if they are they the same site. The are lots of solutions to this problem, but one way links are definitely the most effective.

With one way link management your site is entered into a triangle-like arrangement in that your website (website A) links to website B which links to website C which links back to website A (you), so effectively, you will all benefit from a one way link, and if this process is repeated (IE. one way link management), you will be rewarded with a rise in the rankings as the search engines cannot track this type of linking, therefore it appears natural.

Consider applying the landing page elements that have generated the highest return for you on your pay-per-click advertising.

Use what you’ve learning through PPC advertising to truly target your search engine optimization campaigns. By doing so, you can improve the quality of traffic you’re attracting to your site and reduce your pay per click costs. Don’t waste time optimizing your site for terms that no one is searching on or that never lead to conversion.
