To old China hands, this conjures up some of the worst memories, when China came to a grinding halt for months, while everybody had to stay home and was allowed to go to the shop once a week with guns pointed at you, worn by soldiers in HAZMAT gear. Can’t get any worse than that.

Of course, export growth in China slowed. It was meant to slow. Since the second half of 2007, the Chinese government tried everything to bring exports to more sustainable levels.

Points to consider:

- Retail sales in China rose 23.2 percent in September from a year earlier, matching the gain in August and close to the fastest pace in at least nine years.

- Urban disposable incomes for the first nine months of 2008 rose 14.7 percent from a year earlier. Rural cash incomes climbed 19.6 percent. People have more money and spend it.

- The formerly red-hot Chinese light vehicle market (which includes passenger vehicle and light commercial vehicle segments) is expected to slow in 2008, but it still will grow at very healthy rates. J.D. Power expects Chinese light vehicle sales to come in at 8.9 million units in 2008, which would be an increase of 9.7 % compared to 2007.

- Much of the decline in exports had its cause in the appreciation of the RMB. That was actually a reflection of the rapid depreciation of the USD which took place until July 2008. Have a look at the chart. Until July, the Yuan pretty much appreciated against the USD as the Euro did. The Dollar went down, the Euro and the Yuan went up.

But what happened when the USD started rising, starting in July? The USD/CNY rate barely budged. The EUR/CNY rate did move.

Bloomberg said that the Chinese “central bank has stalled gains by the Yuan against the Dollar since mid-July, protecting jobs in export industries.”

Not true. The chart says they did just the opposite. The Yuan should have gone down sharply against the USD along with the other currencies. However, the Yuan barely moved.

The chart says that the Chinese central bank may have propped up the Yuan against the US Dollar. China also took other measures to cool down their overheating export machine, such as not refunding parts of the VAT for exports, and actually charging export tax on certain items.

Yuan due to go down.

Expect the USD/CNY rate to change radically within the next months, latest after the U.S. elections. We expect the Yuan to drop against the USD, the easiest way for the Chinese government to make Chinese exports more attractive. In the first half of 2008, this would have been a rather unpopular move. But now, the world has other problems than watching the CNY/USD currency pair. If anyone does complain, the obvious explanation is that in light of the strength of the Dollar, the Yuan must follow suit and go down.

And when the USD will drop, as it should when America cranks up the presses to print money to finance the bailout and two wars, the Chinese can keep the USD/CNY level, and make their goods even cheaper in Euro terms.

In fact, you’re a lot more likely to earn over $100,000 next year as a web designer (if you’re really good), a web hosting company, or, best of all, a “web marketing guru” than you are as one of the toiling legions of affiliate marketers.

Yet just as a few people managed to strike it rich panning for gold in California around the turn of the 20th century, so a lucky few are doing the same thing panning for affiliate sales on the Internet at the turn of the 21st. In any case, “affiliate marketing” is one of the most often-searched-for keyword phrases entered into Google. There are, it seems, hundreds of thousands of would-be Internet marketers out there who want to know how to turn their time into gold by joining the affiliate marketing rush. Consequently there are hundreds of websites and “how to” books available nowadays on the subject. I’ll give you the basics briefly and you can then decide if this is something you may wish to delve into further.

The Basics

Basically, affiliate marketing means promoting a company’s products on the Web and then receiving a commission for sales of those products (or for some other result, such as getting them sales leads).

In the abstract it sounds like easy money. You set up a website, become an “affiliate” for a product that seems like it has a good market, then run ads for the product on your website. Then, whenever someone clicks on one of the ads and buys the product, you earn a commission. Simplicity itself.

Now, if you’re not too familiar with this way of making money on the Web, you’re probably wondering, “Okay, so how do I get to be an affiliate for some company’s product? And then once I’m an affiliate, where do I get the ads? And how do I get paid?”

Before I answer those questions let me share a dirty little secret about affiliate marketing with you. In the past many companies which offered affiliate programs never paid their affiliates, or, more commonly, underpaid them. Suppose you promoted XYZ Company’s widgets on your website and received $500 worth of orders in a month. The company has promised to pay you a 20% commission. So you should receive $100. Trouble is, nobody but the company really knew how much your sales were, in many cases. They might actually pay you $50, therefore, or nothing. You wouldn’t know you were being hoodwinked.

Fortunately, there’s now a straightforward way to avoid that problem, and this answers the questions posed above. You simply become an affiliate through an affiliate network like LinkShare or Commission Junction or Clickbank. These networks represent hundreds or thousands of companies. You select the companies on the network you want to promote and your commissions are tallied by the networks, not by the companies whose products you’re promoting. You get paid directly by the networks. In my opinion, this is a huge improvement – at least now you can be sure you’ll get paid for your efforts.

So the answer to the first question above, “How do I get to be an affiliate for some company’s product?” is that you join an affiliate network. This is actually pretty easy. Just go to LinkShare or Commission Junction – the two biggest – and sign up. You’ll need a website, however.

Once you’re been accepted by a network, you can then review their extensive lists of companies which offer affiliate programs through them. You’ll be looking for some good programs that offer products or services that will appeal to the visitors to your site. So for example, if your site is about automobiles, you might want to run ads for auto accessories, auto repair, auto insurance, etc.

You’ll notice that most companies’ affiliate programs pay you on1y for actual sales (i.e., $35 for selling a car insurance policy) whereas others pay you for leads (i.e., $15 for a potential customer filling out an application for a car insurance policy). Guess which of these two types of affiliate programs is more profitable. The answer is the latter is almost inevitably more profitable. So you should, initially at least, only promote programs in which you get paid for leads, not for actual sales.

The way it works is as follows: You pick one or more programs which appeal to you, then apply to become an affiliate of those programs. In most cases, you’ll get approved automatically. In other cases, you’ll receive an email later either accepting or rejecting your application. (The company may have a policy of not accepting “new” websites, or may not accept websites in certain fields, etc. — thus a possible rejection.)

After you’ve been accepted by a few affiliate programs, return to the affiliate network’s website (i.e., the site of Commission Junction or LinkShare) and copy the HTML code for the banner ads or other types of ads you’ll be putting on your site (this HTML will have a tracking code appended to it so that you’ll get paid your commissions).

Once you put these ads onto your website you’re in the affiliate marketing business. At this point it’s just a matter of waiting for some of your visitors to click on those ads and purchase the products or fill out the application forms. Every time this happens you get credited for the stated commission. The networks generally send out checks on a monthly basis.

Doesn’t this sound great or what?. Unfortunately… there are some serious problems.

Affiliate Marketing Usually Doesn’t Work

In spite of much breathless hype by marketing gurus, most people who try affiliate marketing never make a penny of profit. Why not?

One reason is that few website visitors click on banners anymore. We’re all pretty jaded when it comes to banners, in fact we seldom even look at them, and only in very rare instances do we actually click on them and buy something.

Then there’s the huge problem of getting substantial traffic to your website. In order for affiliate marketing to have any chance at all of working you need a lot of of good, targeted traffic. Today, that can be extremely difficult to achieve, because the Web has become a crowded place. No matter what the topic of your site is, there are probably thousands or hundreds of thousands of websites out there already on the same topic. Search engines like Google and Yahoo will index your site and then pretty much forget it exists. You’ll get only a dribble of traffic and few if any sales. In a word, much work and effort, little reward.

Beating the Odds

It’s quite amazing that, despite the tremendous odds, a few people have actually found ways to earn significant incomes from affiliate marketing.

One way they’ve done it has been by using pay-per-click advertising. Google Adwords is a prime example of this, although similar ad-serving systems are available through Yahoo, MSN, and others. In pay-per-click advertising, you purchase ads on search engine results pages – these ads are called “sponsored results” or something similar. You pay a set amount each time someone clicks on the ad – usually anywhere from $0.25 to a few dollars.

That can get expensive fast. If you are paying fifty cents for one click to your ad, that brings you one visitor to your website, who may or may not click on any of your affiliate ads. A hundred such clicks and Google has charged you $50 and you may have gotten zero sales or commissions.

Nonetheless, some people have made this work. One way is by only targeting narrow niches. Not “Canon Cameras” but “Canon Powershot Cameras,” for example, or even better “Cannon Powershot DSC 600.”

Although a very broad keyword phrase like “Canon Cameras,” or worse still, “cameras,” might have thousands of people placing bids on it, a narrow one like “Canon Powershot DSC 600″ might only have a very few – namely, people marketing that particular type of camera. Thus the “per click” cost might be much lower — and the “conversion rate” (the percentage of clicks converting to sales) much higher.

So by finding niches and by bidding on many keyword phrases, some people have done quite well and continue to do so.

Another trick is called “search marketing.” Search marketing simply means to place pay-per-click ads on search engine pages (i.e., “search results” pages). Then when somebody clicks on these ads they’re taken directly to the company’s website, not to yours.

To use the example above, you might put up an ad which takes the visitor straight to the Canon web page where he/she can immediately order the Canon Powershot DSC 600 camera, instead of forcing them to first go to your web site, then click a second time to get to the Canon order page.

Search marketing can be a profitable idea but it is beset with ferocious competition. A select group of people who are extremely good at writing ads and very focused and determined can make it work – it’s being done all the time. But the sad fact is most will just run up Google Adwords bills. If you’d like to look into this further, I suggest a book called Affiliate Millions by Greg Holden and Anthony Borelli (John Wiley & Sons). It spells out everything you need to know to have a fighting chance of becoming a successful search marketer.

Google Adsense as an Alternative

Focusing your efforts entirely on affiliate marketing can be a big gamble. But there’s a way to become an affiliate marketer as a lucrative sideline, and that’s Google Adsense. Assume you have a content website on skydiving and it gets a fair amount of traffic. You can then sign up for Google Adsense and Google will provide you with a snippet of HTML to place on all your pages which will serve targeted ads related to skydiving — for example, small plane flying instruction schools, parachutes, etc. Whenever anyone clicks on one of these ads, Google credits your account with a commission.

Adsense can be a good alternative to Adwords because with Adsense you don’t have to worry about choosing affiliate programs, bidding on keywords, or paying credit card bills for ads. Adsense chooses which ads to run on your site based on your content. Needless to say, if nobody clicks on any of your Adsense ads, you receive no commissions but then you pay no credit card bills either.

According to a recent USA TODAY article, with the headline “Google Search Ads Find Momentum,” a small number of people are cleaning up with Adsense. One website owner, Marc Ostrofsky, is quoted as saying, “I put up a website, add the Google ads, and wait for the money to start flying in.”

But that’s hard to believe. In reality, nobody puts up a website and gets money flying in – you have to generate traffic first. What’s more, Ostrofsky owns a company, iREIT.com, that manages thousands of sites, some of them high-traffic. For most of us, returns from Adsense will be modest but nevertheless welcome. But the big question is, If there is so much wealth to be made marketing products on the Web, how come the gurus aren’t doing it themselves instead of teaching people like you and me how to do it?

- You can check out your site log files; they will tell you what words and phrases your clients use.

- Check competitors ad copy.

Make sure to separate all these keywords into different lists. Place all the typos in one ad group, the plurals in another and similarly go on with the rest. This will lead to easy targeting of your ad.

Well it’s history, another summer come to and end, and I hope yours was a great one. We like to spend the whole month of August in our favorite north woods area, and just hang out on the lake. We take it easy swimming in our secret little places you can only get to by boat. It’s these places we can relax and enjoy the summer far from the rat race.

Were usually on the water before eleven, with our cooler packed and sometimes try and catch some fish before the heat of the day sets in. It will be a few weeks before we let go of the moments we just had this summer. That’s the way it is every September when were back home, settling in for the fall. The autumn has a wonderful feeling of it’s own, but I know it will take a little time before the summer stops tugging at our hearts. The summer is our passion we are both alike.

You have to be passionate about how to live, and how to achieve your goals to get to where you want to be. That’s the way Deb and myself have always felt, always on the same page. Making that choice to never stop believing, never caving in when we have our doubts, our bad days. It’s impossible to unlock those doors that hold us back, if we don’t put fear aside.

Her plan, like most of her contemporaries, is driven by traditional types of investments. During her working life, Ms. X has invested a good deal of money in real estate. In fact, it’s become something of a hobby to her. However, one of the problems with such an approach is that she had to pay taxes on the profits she made from her real estate investments. Using her retirement plan to make the investment, however, Ms. X discovered a way of avoiding these issues, as a number of other savvy individuals have done before. Real estate investing is nothing new as a means of acquiring wealth; it is a practice that has been popular since the beginning of recorded history. Recently I discovered a way to deduct my family’s vacation from my small business taxes. I started a home based travel business. This provides me with many tax deductions. As a tax accountant this immediately got my attention.

Owning a Home based business is one of the most rewarding things you can do with your life, but it requires a lot of hard work and doing research. Most people perceive home businesses as easy and convenient, but it is not easy at all. If you do your homework you will easily avoid most of the common mistakes made by people who will fail at home based business.

First things first. What product or service are you going to offer that your target audience can’t live with out? This is important folks, because no matter how much you love a widget, if your customer thinks they can easily live without a widget, your business is going to be slow, maybe non-existent. You have to have a product or service that can sell.

Second you will have to decide the location of your office. Whether it is in the family room, living room, or your own office, it should be somewhere where you have enough space so that you are not crowded. Make sure it won’t get in your families way so that they can continue in their lives without disturbing your business while you are working. Do your own homework on the tax laws and find out how much space you can write off for business use in your house. Also you have to call the zoning board to find out what kinds of permits you will need to get your business started. Most of this information can be found on the internet so just do your research and you will be working optimally.

Once you get your permits you will be ready to buy your product to sell it and make some money. Make sure whatever you sell, gives you enough profit margin so that you can continue to sell it. Most home business owners think their overhead is basically nothing, so they commit the error of pricing the product too low. You want to set a good enough price for your product so that you’ll be in profit. Make a list of everything you have to buy during the month for your business such as office supplies, extra utilities being used due to business, and all the other little small things that will be involved with paying for your new office. Then once you have a monthly price you should price accordingly so you can make the profit you want to attain.

Now that you have decided on your prices, you need to decide what hours of the day you’re going to work; even though you work at home you can’t be calling people whenever you want. So your home business operation hours must be convenient for the customers, preferably the same every week so you can be consistent and people don’t have to wonder if you will be open at a certain time. Try not to let the answering machine pick it up always because if you never answer your phone they can easily go get your service elsewhere. One of the main parts of working at home is being an excellent customer service person and if you can’t provide that you will most likely fail.

Now, tell me how your family is going to respect your business hours and not bother you while you work. Good Luck. I know it can be done, but you will have to communicate well with your family about what is acceptable and what is not. Some home business owners have a suite with a separate entrance that is not connected to the inside of the house. This works well, the family has to go outside and knock on the door to speak with the business owner during work hours. However you achieve it, the understanding must be clear that when you are working, you are working.

Last, you need to look into the future and plan for the time when your expanding business grows larger than your current home office. Will you hire an assistant to help you do administrative work? How do you plan to accommodate growth? Where is a good location to move to when you need more space and how will you handle the transition? Keep those thoughts in the back of your mind, because eventually they will become a reality. It’s okay if that part of your plan is a little fuzzy right now – you can work out all the details when the day arrives.

Google Keyword Research Tool: When this free tool came out the other week we all had a little dance party in the office we were so excited! Well to be honest? there wasn’t any dancing involved but it sure did give us a reason to celebrate :)

This tool is amazing! Simply type in your keyword and you can see a long list of related keywords with approximate search volumes for those keywords as well! You can even customize the results with this tool: everything from the location (country) of your keyword results to finding out which month had the highest search volumes. This free keyword research tool immediately replaced my other keyword research tools by Wordze and SEO Book after just one test use: that’s how powerful it is. In short, the tool rocks and it instantly makes keyword research way easier and much more efficient!

HTML Playground: This tool is great for those that have limited HTML knowledge or just aren’t sure how to apply the right formatting in an easy and efficient manner. Well this free tool takes all the “hard work” out of HTML coding for you. It has a list of all the most popular tags; simply click on the tag, customize the parameters and colours you desire and the HTML code is ready to go! It even shows you a preview of what your text or image will look like once uploaded! This tool is simply vital for any HTML rookie or beginner.

Firefox Extensions

There are hundreds of free Firefox extensions readily available at Firefox Add-ons. They have tools and add-ons for just about everything! My favourite Firefox add-ons for SEO are:

SEOpen: This add-on lets you place a toolbar in Firefox to quickly analyze everything from the number of Yahoo! Backlinks to verifying whether the PR of a site is legitimate or not; and that’s just the beginning. I think of it as in all-in-one SEO resource that is absolutely mandatory!

SearchStatus: This nifty little add-on simply lets you display the Google PageRank, Alexa rank and Compete ranking anywhere on your browser. It also allows you to highlight nofollow links and comes equipped with a fast keyword density analyzer. Pretty sweeeeeet!

SeoQuake: This tool is one of the most advanced Firefox add-ons for SEO. Yet it’s perfect for both beginners and advanced users. Basically, SeoQuake displays the parameters for search results and even includes the findings into the search engine result pages ‘SERPs’ for the most popular search engines. You can then set these parameters to display by ascending or descending order; so you can search for any keyword in Google or Yahoo! and then set the order to show the highest PR’s, or the most Yahoo! backlinks, or by whatever parameter(s) you are most interested in.

And now, my favourite Firefox add-on is…(insert drum roll)… Speed Dial!

This add-on lets you visually display your most used websites so you can access them instantly! Forget about using bookmarks ever again! Simply open up the add-on and enter the number of columns and rows to determine the amount of sites displayed in your speed dial. To enter in the sites simply click on the boxes and type in the URL’s.

When you want to access your favourite sites simply hold CTRL and press the number of the site (number set in speed dial options) to open it up in a new tab or window. Or you can press the speed dial button which displays all your sites in one window and then you can just click on the site you want to open. Once you get the hang of this add-on you can instantly access your favourite site(s) with just a couple of clicks: saving you both time and effort! It’s a win-win situation like no other!

There are many reasons in which a data centre can fail. It can be quite frustrating, so it is important to know what those reasons are so that you can prevent them or know what to do when they happen. Because a lot of data centers exist on a site separate from the computers that are retrieving data from them, it is important that data centers continue running. When they go down, all computers pulling from them from various places around a single country or even the world are not going to be able to retrieve any information. Such is true for customer service jobs in which customer information must be retrieved from a secure data centre that resides elsewhere. If that data center is not operating, money is lost because employees are unable to do their jobs and customers become very unhappy that their situation cannot be resolved.

Reasons why data centres fail

Some of the reasons why data centers fail can be prevented and then there are some ways in which they cannot. However, it is important to do what is necessary to ensure as few outages as possible.

Here are some reasons for failure:

- The “wear-in” phase ? This is the point in time in which the data center has just become operational. It is typical that certain things may fail as they are trying to become fully operational. It is like a toddler learning how to walk. The data center has to walk too, so it is good to let it run with minimal use and gradually build until it has gotten its legs. This involves comprehensive testing as the system usage increases in order to fix problems before they become a problem.

- The “wear-out” phase ? This is when the data center is reaching the end of its life. Regular maintenance and care will slow this process, but major parts will eventually wear out. It is ideal to consistently monitor the system in order to predict failure and avoid catastrophe.

- Power failure ? Power failure is devastating to anything that relies on it for operation. It is especially devastating to a data center. That is why it is important to have a generator or two ready to take over in case the power goes.

- Generator failure ? Generators need care too and they need to be tested. Power goes out and generators take over in order to keep the data center running. Generators have been known to go out and cause data center failure.

- Metal whiskers ? If the data center hardware is sitting on a metallic surface, then that metallic surface could grow zinc whiskers. These have been known to cause short circuits, especially in data centres. There are also tin whiskers that grow out from tin and they too cause shorts. Silver whiskers that grow on silver electrical contacts and gold whiskers that develop on gold plated services are also known to cause short outs. Large fans that suck the whiskers in can be used and the elements that produce them can be replaced.

Prevention is key

Prevention is the key to keeping your data center up and running. If any of these elements occur, it is good to stay calm and do what needs to be done to keep the problem from occurring again. If you have experienced generator failure, you may wish to invest in a backup to your main generator. If you?re building a new data center, be sure to use flooring that does not produce any type of metal whiskers that can short out your hardware. By being vigilant, you can ensure that your data center uptime will be at or near 100%.

A Word about Strict RSS Validation

When using the ever-popular WordPress blogging script you will find a multiple amount of plugins that will work with it. Of these one of the more important plugins for our discussion is the ones that make adding your RSS feed to peoples feed readers simple. One of the more popular ones is available from the website AddThis.com they make a plugin for there popular bookmarking and social networking announcement services.

You need however to be careful when putting together your blog titles and watch out for their structure. A fair number of the services that allow you to reed your RSS feeds have strict adhesion to RSS Validation rules; for example My MSN will not let you import your feeds if they do not have validated titles. Characters in your title such as quotation marks, apostrophes and such will cause your titles to not validate under these rules and thus prevent a number of people from being able to receive your feed.

This can get tricky when you have a title that really screams out for an apostrophe such as “Today’s Breaking News” great for human consumption but the validator will hiccup at the apostrophe in the word “today’s.” You’ll want to avoid these kinds of things even if it is a compelling title I would suggest rewording it to say “Hot News Today” and avoid the whole headache entirely.

Secrets of Using a Blog Pinging Service Effectively

There is a really easy way to almost automatically increase your blogs link popularity by the effective use of a blog pinging service. Now this is not to say that you don’t still have to worry about things like writing compelling content of course you will if you want them to stick around or come back. You will also want to make sure you are updating your blog often to maximize this strategy. If you are taking care of these things then a blog pinging service can do a lot to help out your blog or website get noticed by building backlinks to it.

Now when looking for a pining service you are going to want to look for a few basic things. These are a couple of the key things, you want to be able to ping multiple sites from one service. This can save a lot of time over going to each site individually and pinging them at their own site. It is important that the service pings all of the following RSS feed directories, RSS aggregators, and blog search engines such as Technorati from one simple to use form.

A strategy we find gives us better return is to ping each site separately. This is not to much harder as your information will already be populated in the websites form so it is just a case of selecting a new service to ping and re-clicking the submit button. It doesn’t matter which service you pick find one you are happy with and use it regularly this is the key to making this strategy work. They all have their good and bad points so it is mostly a choice or preference to the site and the services it pings. One last word of caution do not think that multiple pinging is good this will get you labeled as a Spammer and get your IP and website band.
