There are a great deal of icons available to link a post to numerous, often obscure social media sites. That being said, do you really want an icon for every site just because there are plug-ins that allow you to do so? In the end your post might look like a Christmas tree with the amount of icons at the end of it.

At first glance the idea of encouraging your blog readers to digg, stumble, bookmark and recommend your post seems sound. And if it works for a few services, more has to be better. Right?

Place yourself in your reader’s saddle and ponder if the numerous links on your site serve any special purpose to delight them? If not, then remove them.

If your reader is a member of one of the social media sites they probably have installed a dedicated toolbar for that site. Using that familiar toolbar will be faster for them than searching for the right icon on your site.

If your reader does not know what social bookmarking is all about, it’s unlikely that they will take the dozens of icons on your site as an inspiration to find out AND then after they have registered on a site come back to your post to bookmark it.

Besides self-highlighting, do you think that many more people will actually spend time to highlight your post on different social media sites?

So is it worth it to take up this much space on your blog with these icons? The correct answer is of course to test it. You can track clicks on outbound links with Google Analytics.

That being considered, every once and awhile you should persuade your readers to digg your post using one particular service that is the objective of that certain post.
