We’ve all had those questions in our business that either stop our train of thought or slow our level of productivity down. Ranging from product creation, affiliate marketing, teleseminars, financial matters, I know in my own business I’ve come upon hundreds of business questions that I wish I could know the answer to. So, in this article I am going to answer two questions I’ve had about teleseminars.

Here is the first question:

Instead of selling my ‘normal’ products, such as a book, on my teleseminar, I really wanted to try to sell a new program. Can anything be sold on a teleseminar?

When it comes to product creation, one of the things that I like to do is look to leverage one product into the next as much as possible. Now, in certain situations, I would encourage you to think about back-end products because after somebody has gone through a program, they are obviously going to have questions, come to certain conclusions, etc. So that leads itself very nicely into a situation where you can sell back-end products and so that is one of the things that I would encourage you to do, think about that because you want to roll the momentum from one product right into the next.

As far as selling a product, training, assessment, eBook, whatever on a teleseminar, I think you can sell just about anything on a teleseminars. It is just a matter of positioning it correctly and establishing the value throughout the call, so if you want to sell the assessment then great, position that accordingly right from the get-go.

One recommendation that I want to pass onto you is to always think about creating back-end products because if you have a product such as an assessment, to be able to answer the questions and make the appropriate corrections your client will have after completing their assessment leads itself very nicely into any type of back-end product.

Here is the second question:

Whose photo and voice should I use when conducting a teleseminar that involves interviewing an expert?

A couple of suggestions. Number one, it would work really if you could create a picture with both of you in it, if you only have room for one picture. Doing this is recommended, if possible. Obviously if you are able to use both photos on the Ask Campaign, registration page and web cast page, do it.

If you are limited to only using one picture, the second suggestion would be to use the host’s. The reasoning behind this is that the host is who will be the one to introduce the guest and bridge the gap. Unless your guest is very famous and known by everyone, you can use your audio to build anticipation for your guest and the upcoming call.

You may be in Mail Order, Direct Mail, or you may be a local merchant with 150 employees; whichever, however or whatever—you’ve got to know how to keep your business alive during economic recessions. Anytime the cash flow in a business, large or small, starts to tighten up, the money management of that business has to be run as a “tight ship.”

Some of the things you can do include protecting yourself from expenditures made on sudden impulse. We’ve all bought merchandise or services we really didn’t need simply because we were in the mood, or perhaps in response to the

flamboyancy of the advertising or the persuasiveness of the salesperson. Then we sort of “wake up” a couple of days later and find that we’ve committed hundreds of dollars of business funds for an item or service that’s not essential to the success of our own business, when really pressing items had been waiting for those dollars.

If you are incorporated, you can eliminate these “impulse purchases” by including in your by-laws a clause that states: “All purchasing decisions over (a certain amount) are contingent upon approval by the board of directors.” This will force you to consider any “impulse purchases” of considerable cost, and may even be a reminder in the case of smaller purchases.

If your business is a partnership, you can state, when faced with a buying decision, that all purchases are contingent upon the approval of a third party. In reality, the third party can be your partner, one of your department heads, or even one of your suppliers.

If your business is a sole proprietorship, you don’t have much to worry about really, because as an individual you have three days to think about your purchase, and then to nullify that purchase if you think you don’t really need it or can’t afford it.

While you may think you cannot afford it, be sure that you don’t “short-change” yourself on professional services. This would apply especially during a time of emergency. Anytime you commit yourself and move ahead without completely investigating all the angles, and preparing yourself for all the contingencies that may arise, you’re skating on thin ice. Regardless of the costs involved, it always pays off in the long run to seek out the advice of experienced professionals before embarking on a plan that could ruin you.

Many small companies set up advisory boards of outside professional people. These are sometimes known as Power Circles, and once in place, the business always benefits, especially in times of short operating capital. Such an advisory board or power circle should include an attorney, a certified public accountant, civic club leaders, owners or managers of businesses similar to yours, and retired executives. Setting up such an advisory board of directors is really quite easy, because most people you ask will be honored to serve.

Once your board is set up, you should meet once a month and present material for review. Each meeting should be a discussion of your business problems and an input from your advisors relative to possible solutions. These members of your board of advisors should offer you advice as well as alternatives, and provide you with objectivity. No formal decisions need to be made either at your board meeting, or as a result of them, but you should be able to gain a great deal from the suggestions you hear.

You will find that most of your customers have the money to pay at least some of what they owe you immediately. To keep them current, and the number of accounts receivable in your files to a minimum, you should call them on the phone and ask for some kind of explanation why they’re falling behind. If you develop such a habit as part of your operating procedure, you’ll find your invoices will magically be drawn to the front of their piles of bills to pay. While you should maintain a courteous attitude, don’t be hesitant, or too much of a “nice guy” when it comes to collecting money.

Something else that’s a very good business practice, but which few business owners do is to methodically build a credit rating with their local banks. Particularly when you have good cash flow, you should borrow $100 to $1,000 from your banks every 90 days or so. Simply borrow the money, and place it in an interest bearing account, and then pay it all back at least a month or so before it’s due. By doing this, you will increase the borrowing power of your signature, and strengthen your ability to obtain needed financing on short notice. This is a kind of business leverage that will be of great value to you if or whenever your cash position becomes less favorable.

By all means, join your industry’s local and national trade associations. Most of these organizations have a wealth of information available on everything from details on your competitors to average industry sales figures, new products, services, and trends.

If you are given a membership certificate or wall plaque, you should display these conspicuously on your office wall. Customers like to see such “seals of approval” and feel additional confidence in your business when they see them.

Still another thing often overlooked: If at all possible, you should have your spouse work in the business with you for at least three or four weeks per year. The important thing is that if for any reason you are not available to run the business, your spouse will be familiar with certain people and situations about your business. These people should include your attorney, accountant, any consultants or advisors, creditors and your major suppliers. The long-term advantages of having your spouse work four weeks per year in your business with you will greatly outweigh the short-term inconvenience. Many couples share responsibility and time entirely, which is in most cases even more desirable.

Whenever you can, and as often as you need it, take advantage of whatever free business counseling is available. The Small Business Administration published many excellent booklets, checklist and brochures on quite a large variety of businesses. These publications are available through the U.S. Government printing office. Most local universities and many private organizations hold seminars at minimal cost, and often without charge. You should also take advantage of the services offered by your bank and local library.

The important thing about running a small business is to know the direction in which you’re heading; to know on a day-to-day basis your progress in that very direction; to be aware of what your competitors are doing and to practice good money management at all times. All this will prepare you to recognize potential problems before they arise.

In order to survive with a small business, regardless of the economic climate, it is essential to surround yourself with smart people, and practice sound business management at all times.

Traffic exchanges seem to be everywhere. I always thought they were a waste of time. Basically in my mind how could you get traffic if all everyone did was surf from page to page never actually paying attention to any of the ads. Boy was I wrong.

Here are 3 traffic exchange tips that will make a difference in your traffic if you use them.

1. People actually do pay attention to part of the ad. Usually the title and maybe a couple of sentences or graphics. I know I did. The ads can be quite interesting. You certainly can get ideas for ads of your own. So what does not work. Long sales pages are boring. So are pages that immediately blare out sound or someone’s voice. I am playing music on my computer and will not even let those ads finish. I just leave and go to another page. What does work is landing pages or as they are sometimes called, splash pages. Just a short hard hitting ad with a sign up form to receive a free gift in exchange for your contact info for future follow up. These work great.

2. Surf several traffic exchanges at one time. If you are after credits then you can not wait for one ad to end and the next one to come up. You need to load up 4 or 5 traffic exchanges at a time. Work your way from one to the next until you make it back to the first one. Although this is not as fun as actually reading the ads, if you treat it like a job then your job is to get as many credits as possible and this one way to do it.

3. Read your emails and see which traffic exchanges are running specials. If one has double credits spend most of your time on it. Make the most advantage of your time. 4. Upgrade as soon as you can on your favorite traffic exchanges. This only makes sense. You earn more credits, more impressions, more text link ads, or whatever that exchange offers. When you surf each click can be worth 2 or 3 times as much as well which really makes a difference in your exposure.

Depending on the exchange you can upgrade for anywhere from $5 a month to up to $30 a month. Upgrading is up to you, but I advise it if you can afford it. This is 4 traffic exchange tips that I know work for sure because I have tried it first hand and saw a definite spike in my traffic from it.

We’ve all had friends in our circle who were known as “Mary & John”, and when “John” split “Mary” was alone. Mary was the “odd” number at the dinner party and we were all concerned about her. Well, today it seems that the union of Customer & Service have had a breakup. Service has split and Customer is on his/her own.

Today, let me tell you a story that many of you will find humorous but is all too common. I can tell you this without fear of our local editor getting sued because it’s about me, but business owners take note that you don’t fit the profile of company “X”.

Four weeks ago I decided that I needed another green recycling can from my trash pickup company. We’ll call them Brown Keg Trash Pickup, an anonymous company in the interest of avoiding litigation. I called their Customer Service number, and as an environmentally conscious citizen requested my extra recycle can. The cheerful voice on the other end of the line chirped, “Of course, we’ll have one delivered in 48 hours.” After giving her all the pertinent location information, I hung up the phone with the satisfied feeling of a good citizen.

I arrived home about 5 p.m. the next day and I was happy to see another green can at the mouth of my driveway. When I looked again, I noticed that I had another green can – but it was without a lid. I quickly dialed my cheerful telephone voice at Brown Keg Company thanking her graciously for the rapid service and then told her about the missing lid. Just as cheerfully as the first time, she told me to leave it at the end of my driveway after my usual trash pickup and they would replace the entire unit since they didn’t have extra lids. I agreed, and after hanging up the phone I pondered their plight of having lidless cans but no extra lids. I conjured up all sorts of scenarios that explained where all the lids to the lidless cans went, and sympathized with their predicament.

Well, 3 days went by and there sat my poor, green, lidless can at my driveway’s mouth and a replacement never arrived. Feeling empathy for this green plastic waif, I returned it to the side of it’s brother that had a lid. I called my cheerful Customer Service voice again, and reiterated the plight of my poor lidless can and after a chuckle she assured me a complete unit would be forthcoming. I found it necessary to make use of my lidless friend, and put it out the next pickup day filled to the brim. Fortunately, it wasn’t windy and all the contents remained inside it. That was 2 weeks ago, and life being what it is other more important tasks have occupied me until this morning when facing another pickup day I thought of my lidless friend.

Once more I picked up the phone and called my trash pickup company, and this time I listened to a litany of choices of buttons I could punch and chose my cheerful Customer Service button again. I was transferred, listened to a brief melody when there was a “click” and I expected my cheerful voice to chirp “hello”. The next thing I heard was another click, silence, and then the dreaded dial tone that means you’ve been disconnected. Not being one of the “fainthearted”, I simply redialed my number. Again there was the litany of button choices, my choice and the music, and just when I began to feel that all was right with the world I heard – “click”, “dial tone” and nothing.

This was not the morning for the phone to be playing games with me, so I made one more determined effort and REDIALED! “NASA, we have lift-off !” I once more heard the litany of button choices, but this time I outfoxed that monotonous voice and punched “0″. I asked for the Manager of Customer Service, I was given her name and was transferred. What greeted my eager ear was, “You’ve reached the voicemail of ……., please leave your name and number and she’ll return your call.”

So here we sit – my lidless, green can and I facing another pick-up day. This eager-to-serve plastic green waif must bravely face another dutiful day half-clothed.

You must admit that is an amusing story, and one that far too many of us have lived through, but what a sad commentary it is about our business community. Doesn’t it make you wonder if our language has changed so drastically that what we interpret “Customer Service” to mean – is not what today’s business owners mean. It makes me wonder when the marriage of Customer and Service broke-up, leaving us all the lonely ones.

Entrepreneurs and business owners take note! If you’re going to have a number for your customers to access your Customer Service, please follow these rules.

* Have the phone manned by an employee that can hear thunder and see lightening. * Give that employee training in helping the caller and not shuffling the problem to another desk. * Have an overseer, who can also hear thunder and see lightening, check that all incoming complaints were handled appropriately.

After learning how to find your customers and what they want; after getting them committed to doing business with YOU; and after wooing them to keep them as your customers – WHY WOULD YOU LET “SERVICE” DIVORCE “CUSTOMER?”

If your customers aren’t getting the service they require from you – your competitor will be only too happy to help them!

Working at Home Isn”t All Fun and Games

I enjoy telling people that I “work at home.” I can see that wistful look in their eyes, and I can hear it in their voices when they say, “That must be nice.” And then for about five minutes, they do a little daydreaming about what it would be like to “work at home.” I never explain to them about the measure of self-discipline it takes, and how great are the temptations to take a “break” and reorganize my sock drawer when I find myself faced with working on a project that is less than interesting (or worse yet, “not as profitable” as other projects). Why burst their bubble? Let them daydream awhile?.

Working at home can be all the wonderful things that those people daydream about. Setting my own hours, working at my own pace (project deadlines permitting), running to the market at 1 o”clock on a Wednesday afternoon when there”s nobody there—these are just a few of the plusses of working at home. For parents (whether it is the mom or dad, or both working at home), being able to adjust their working schedule to school schedules, being able to take the kids to the orthodontist or to soccer practice, working at home is a definite plus. For people who don”t work at home and who want to work at home, it is probably hard to think of even one minus. But the fact of the matter is, the minuses do exist—in abundance.

It is not my purpose here to ruin all your hopes or plans to establish yourself as a work-at-homer. In fact, I do encourage you to follow that dream and be your own boss. However, I want you to take just a few minutes to take stock of your situation and once and for all decide if working at home really is in your best interest.

First, and obviously, you have to have a job skill that is amenable to the at-home environment. If you trim poodles on the weekend and think you can turn it into a full-time at-home business, then look around. Do you live in a two-bedroom apartment on the second floor and just do your neighbor”s poodle once a month (but you do it really well)? Or do you live a four-bedroom ranch house with a three-car garage that can be made over into “Donna”s Clip Joint” and happen to live in an urban neighborhood where everyone has pets? And even if you do, what about all the permits that you will need? Will you be able to pursue this type of work at home, and do so legally?

The most applicable work-at-home job skills involve the use of a computer, the Internet, phone, fax, and other small business/office machines. You can hardly drive from home to the grocery store without seeing those signs nailed to telephone poles: “Got a Computer? Earn up to $2000 at home!” Of course, you can, but can you?

For the sake of argument, let”s presume then that you have a computer and an assortment of small business machines, and that you do indeed have some skill that you believe can be marketed. Let”s focus on you for a minute: Are you self-disciplined? Are you organized? Do you have the proper workspace where you can work undisturbed? Are you able to face a workday where you have no supervision or guidance? Can you work at home, day after day, without having the people contact that you would typically find “on the job”? When you have overlapping projects, will you be able to cope with the necessary prioritizing so that you get the time-critical job done on time without jeopardizing the next job in line?

By offering a product upgrade: If you have already created a written info product (ebook or special report) and have conducted interviews while doing research for the product, you can then offer the audio files as an upgrade to the base product. For instance, if you offer the basic product for $19.99, you can include the audio files to the customer for an upgraded price of $24.95 or higher, depending on how much audio there is to accompany the product.

Product Downgrade: On the opposite side of the above description, you can use audio files as a downgrade to an existing product. If you have a coaching program that includes written guides, audio interviews with experts, and one-on-one or group coaching, you could offer the audio interviews as a downgrade for those who can’t afford the whole package. For example, you could price the total package at $199, but offer the audios for those that want to “self-study” for a price of $75. Those that can’t afford $199 will feel that they are getting a good bargain, and you will have turned a “non-sell” into a $75 sell.

Audio Information Product: In addition to the product upgrade and downgrade features, you could offer audio files as entirely new information products. In addition to selling interviews with experts you recorded as research for existing information products, you could invite people who have already purchased the product onto a teleconference line for a question and answer session with you, and possibly, the other experts you interviewed when creating the product. You could record the q&a session and offer it to all future customers.

Seminar Series: A great way to generate some traffic for your site, create buzz, and make money is to offer a seminar series. You can approach other business owners that your target market will find interesting and ask if they would like to be a part of your seminar series.

Depending on how much traffic you currently have, you may be able to charge the presenters a fee to have a spot in your seminar as well. You can opt to allow people to dial in on a teleconference line or meet in a web conference room and listen to the live seminar for free, and then charge a fee for access to the recordings of the seminars. Alternatively, you can charge a fee upfront and only give paying customers access to the live seminars.

As you can see, there are numerous ways to make money with your interviews. You will find readers will enjoy hearing your voice, as well as hearing from other experts. With a little organization, you can bring a whole new stream of income with your audio interviews.

We all love freedom. However, the concept of freedom is something that politicians and pundits use and abuse for their benefit. The Founding Fathers never intended freedom to be a spectator sport or something that professional politicians would usurp for political gain.

One problem we have is a tendency toward excessive political correctness. We’re all so worried about not offending anyone and we shrink away from having any opinions. This means we don’t learn how to argue our points and don’t have to defend our beliefs. And therefore, we aren’t empowered or informed to the extent that we could be. When you truly know an issue, only then can you defend what you believe to be true. And only by engaging others can we learn and understand our differences.

This fear of offending is a problem. It leads to us being a nation of mutes. We keep quiet and “going along to get along” instead of making our voices heard. Those that want power take advantage of our silence and submissiveness and begin to foist all manner of rules that we’re supposed to just go along with.

The biggest offenders of our seemingly required submission to authority is the police. Their duty is to protect and serve, yet they seem to have forgotten this and instead believe they are around to seem how much compliance they can get out of each and every person they come into contact with.

The following story illustrates what I mean.

Recently I came across an article in The Oregonian entitled “Four Sue Police, Alleging ‘Dirty Tactics’”.

One of the four, Frank Waterhouse, who is suing the police department for unlawful seizure with excessive force, alleges that police fired a Taser and bean bag rounds at him because he was videotaping their search of a friend’s property.

He says in the suit that the police immediately came after him when they saw that he was videotaping and they yelled at him to “put it (the camera) down.” When the officers came at him, (as he was running away) he said, “Don’t come after me.” He said seconds later he was shot with a bean bag gun and a Taser and fell to the ground.

Officers wrote in their reports that Waterhouse ran off, they chased him and then bean-bagged and Tasered him. One officer wrote, “He had refused to drop the camera which could be used as a weapon.”

Hmmm. . . how can it be that he was running away from the officers and still seen as a threat?

Good people keep quiet because they believe it is the ‘politically correct’ thing to do, and in turn then they get whatever the authority figures give them. I’d say it’s high time to begin using your persuasion skills to let others know what you think. Don’t let this happen to you.

5. Keep background noises to a minimum. Start with a request that cell phone ringers be turned off. Don’t type near the phone’s receiver. If you’re at home, put the dogs in a different room.

6. Have minutes be taken by another attendee. You will be using your computer to present content (PowerPoint, Spreadsheets, whatever) and should never ask people to watch you type meeting minutes. It’s like watching paint dry…

7. Check for understanding. After each key topic, make a point of pausing and asking a question or two to gauge their understanding. It can be as simple as “Does this approach to the budget make sense?” Use this feedback as a replacement for seeing their facial expressions.

8. Keep track of who’s joined the call. This is particularly important if it’s going to be an interactive meeting (as opposed to a formal presentation). Your participants will want to know who else is on the call. Ask everyone to identify themselves at the start of the meeting.

What It Is and How It Works – For those who are unfamiliar with the term, GPS stands for Global Positioning System.
