If your website was one of your sales staff would you be happy with his results? A good website design should deliver you quality leads and generate a return on your investment – not just than just sit there and look good.

Remember that website design is a marketing activity not a technology decision. So many people seek out a web developer as their first port of call when they need a website. But that’s putting the cart before the horse.

Your first activity when contemplating a website should be to think about your marketing objectives and what job you need your website to do for you.

To do that let’s revisit the sales person analogy. If your website was a sales person what should its sales process be? How will it get customers to engage with them and your company. Thinking about this analogy forces you consider what information and functions your website needs to get you real sales results.

For a start, You need to arm your ‘online salesperson’ with information to they can appear knowledgeable about the benefits of your products and services. He needs to be able to succinctly articulate what your unique selling proposition is.

You need your salesperson to acknowledge that customers are different stages of their buying process and therefore have different informational needs. You need people to trust your online salesperson too – so consider what do you need to do or say on your website to engender trust. Even the aesthetics of your website can contribute to trust. A shabby looking website from 1992 isn’t going to help your image.

Not everyone will buy or engage on their first visit. Your online salesperson needs to provide a reason for the customer to come back. Constantly updated content gives people reason to return. Make sure your website is a worthy destination. A website that never changes is like a retail store that doesn’t change their window display. It makes people think they’ve already seen everything you have to offer and they won’t bother to come in.

At some stage in the process, your ‘online salesperson’ needs to ask the customer’s name and contact details. To do this, you usually need to give them the promise of something in return (eg. early notification of specials, a free assessment). This is a critical point in your sales process. Now your visitor isn’t anonymous – he has a name and you know how to contact him and have permission to do so. At this point, you can call them an actual ‘lead’. Yippee.

Once your online sales person has promised something they have to deliver. They need to follow up on their promise. If you promised email notifications of sales, make sure you do it. Take every opportunity to re-engage with them. That means more opportunities to communicate with your customers and ultimately make sales.

If you actually want to sell your products online, at some point you need to facilitate the sale. Online shopping cart facilities make this easy. Design your sales process so that it provides a good shopping experience. No-one likes waiting in a checkout queue and similarly online shoppers don’t like clunky purchase processes.

So when you’re ready for a new website – remember, the brief to your web designer should read more like a job description than a shopping list.

One of the most important factors to look at when purchasing web hosting is technical support. Building a website can be complex, and you will undoubtedly need assistance from your hosting company. You should be able to easily contact your hosting company and have your problem solved quickly. There are a variety of support options and you should choose a company that offers them all. Your first step for help will probably be an online “knowledge base” at your hosting company. Many questions can be answered there. You’ll also want your hosting company to offer assistance by chat, email or ticket system, and 24-hour phone support.

Let’s talk about uptime. Uptime is the percentage of time your site is “up” or available to viewing by your visitors. Price is another factor to evaluate. You, like everyone, want the best price you can get. But we’ve all learned that you get what you pay for. My advice with regard to hosting cost is to try to get a good price, but know that really cheap hosting does not make up for a lack of good support and services. Be aware that there are free web hosting companies, often requiring you to put up with advertising. There are some free web hosting sites that do not have advertising, but know that free web hosting services disappear frequently. In my opinion, free hosting is not worth the hassle of moving your website to a new company every couple of months.

I wrote a comment yesterday in response to a couple of blog posts that attacked SEO and the SEO industry, attempting to illustrate to the author of the rants that search engine optimization brings a specialized skill set and a core group of knowledge that can help others, from small businesses with great ideas, to larger organizations that can benefit from an independent voice that has experience and knowledge about search engines.

Unfortunately, my comment went unpublished for whatever reason.

One of the underlying assertions of the post I responded to was that in the hands of a competent web developer, a site should rank well in search engines as long as the people behind the site created something great and beautiful, and told a couple of friends. Another of the underpinnings behind the rants against SEO was that search engine optimization wasn’t a legitimate form of marketing. A third postulated that SEOs were the force behind such things as the botnets, blog spam, and scraped and autogenerated content that appears on the Web.

With the exception of striving to build something great, I couldn’t disagree more strongly.

The practice of SEO isn’t web development, though it sometimes requires that development problems on a site be addressed. Successful search engine optimization starts with a number of questions, such as:

Who is your audience? Who are your competitors? What makes you stand out from your competitors?

Some other important steps can include learning about the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities,and threats to a business, defining business goals, collaborating on defining metrics to measure success, and developing an SEO strategy to optimize a site for search engines and for visibility in other places on the Web.

The practice of SEO isn’t spamming the Web, with the creation and use of spyware, viruses, and scrapers that autogenerate web spam. Instead, it’s helping people make intelligent and creative decisions that help them reach an audience that is interested in what they have to offer.

In my response, I included 10 questions involving SEO and search engines which might be issues that search engine optimizers might come across, that I wouldn’t expect most developers to have spent much time thinking about. I’ve written about most of these here, and I thought it might be fun to share them.

1. What impacts might Microsoft’s VIPS, Yahoo’s Template Extraction, and Google’s Segmentation of Visual Gaps have upon a search engine’s weighing of links, document representation, shingles based duplicate content detection, and categorization of topics on a page, and how might a search engine determine which segment is the most important?

2. What steps should one take to try to get a site to rank well for a query in Google Maps, and how might something like location prominence and location sensitivity of that query term impact the range and rankings of sites that appear in a Google Maps listing?

3. What are some of the potential flaws that a search engineer might make when using a discounted cumulative gain approach to evaluating the relevancy of search results at different positions?

4. How might image size, image resolution, image contrast, inclusion of a face in an image, use of images across multiple pages of a site, internal links on a site to images, and external links on a site to images impact the possible rankings of images in search results?

5. What should be contained in a video XML sitemap to make it more likely that the videos included are crawled and indexed by Google?

6. How might Google customize search results for a searcher based upon language and country preferences and past browsing history, even when a searcher isn’t even logged into their Google account and seeing personalized results?

7. What types of user behavior data might the search engines be using to reorder search results besides simple clickthrough rates, and how might those kinds of signals be used in determining sitelinks or quicklinks that Google, Yahoo, and Bing may show in search results?

8. How might a search engine determine which kinds of results besides web pages to blend into search results, and how might that approach change when named entities are involved?

9. What kinds of ranking signals might make it more likely that a news source ranks well in Google’s news search, and why might the search engine choose one article over others when the stories are substantially similar?

10. How are search suggestions (query refinements) chosen by a search engine to include in search results, and why might a search engine show one type of search suggestion at the top of search results, and another type at the bottom of the results.

Make sure that you are using the best keywords for your site and build your site around them; the last thing you want is to have to go back and redo most of your content because you have used less than optimal keywords. #5 ? Give Pay Per Click advertising a try. One of the best ways to bring in traffic to your brand new site is to use pay per click ads. This is a very cost effective means of bringing in traffic ? you only pay when you get a visitor to your site via one of the ads. Google’ pay per click ads are probably the best choice. Google’s AdWords is a great tool for SEO and traffic generation. It’s not free, but it will get you results and is well worth the cost.

I speak to many small businesses working on organic search marketing. They usually understand the concept of keyword research, but often they miss a basic step that makes the difference between a successful search program and one that just bumps along without creating much of an impact.

Sure, they follow the basic steps. They analyze their logs to see which words are bringing the most traffic, the better to optimize for them. If they are smart, they analyze which keywords bring the most conversions, not just the most traffic. They understand the priorities and they use them to improve their Web site to drive even more traffic with those keywords. Great job, right?

Well, not exactly. It’s good as far as it goes, but there is a big missing step that can make a big difference in organic search success. You must also think about the keywords that aren’t bringing any traffic to your site right now.

For large sites, this is less of an issue. Larger sites get so much traffic that almost any keyword shows up in the referral list somewhere. But for small sites, that’s not true. For small sites, it’s easy for a referral list to miss important keywords.

What can you do to find these hidden keywords?

Check your competitors. You might be missing these keywords, but someone is getting them. See what words your competitors use on their sites and see if you are missing some of them on yours. Brainstorm outside your team. Get a perspective from your customers and others who are less familiar with your offerings. They might use words to describe your products that you don’t. Expand your buying cycle. Too often, we focus only on the later parts of the buying cycle. We focus on product names and model numbers and all the words people use when they are near purchase, but we forget the words people use at the outset of the cycle. Often we have no information on our sites about the problems our products solve-keywords about the problems are often overlooked. If you’ve been focusing only on the keywords that already bring you traffic, think about whether there might be keywords that you’re completely missing. Finding just a few of those hidden keywords might provide you the boost your organic search program has been missing.

There are clients SEOs love to have and then there are those other kind. Every SEO has them and very few SEOs can be so selective as to weed out every client that isn’t the “perfect client” (and those that do generally work only for themselves.)

Being the perfect client may not be attainable, but you can certainly avoid being the bad client nobody wants. Here are seven things bad SEO clients do:

Unreasonable expectations It’s not always the client’s fault when there are unreasonable expectations. Sometimes the SEOs propagate misinformation in order to get the sale. Other times once they get involved in the site things look far different than they originally appeared. It is the responsibility of the client to ensure their expectations are in check with reality, despite any claims of the SEO. This is especially true when it comes to overall expectations vs. monetary investment. There is only so much that can be done with the time and money allotted.

Expectations should be closely guarded with plenty of room for moving the goalpost, depending on the situation. Bad SEO clients expect results outside the bounds of what is likely and refuse to temper those as things change.

Don’t return calls or emails There is nothing worse than an SEO campaign being slowed down or halted by lack of client communication. If your SEO is asking for feedback, there is a reason for it. If they are waiting on you to provide information it’s possible that your campaign will remain at a standstill until they get it. Make it a point to answer all communications from your SEO as quickly as possible. The only person that suffers from holding things up is you!

Clients need to be engaged with the marketing process. Bad SEO clients can often be their own worst enemy and can impair the marketing efforts by not returning calls and emails to the SEO.

Forwarding SEO spam emails Why is it that SEO clients often have trouble with recommendations proposed by their SEO but whenever they get a spam email they forward it asking, “why aren’t you doing this?” This is the ultimate example of not trusting the SEO. You’re putting your faith in a complete stranger who’s spamming every site they can rather than trusting that your SEO knows what they are doing. If your site can’t be found, did you ever wonder how the spammers found you?

Clients need to be involved in the campaign development process, but bad SEO clients forward every SEO spam email they get. This forces the SEO to take time away from actual SEO work to explain why the email is wrong, why things aren’t as the email says they are, and to defend their work. That’s hours of wasted time.

Overwriting SEO’s work This is a personal pet peeve. SEOs go though a lot of research and effort before making any changes to a client’s site. Whether the changes are a major reworking of a page, or a few minor edits to a title tag, they all have reason and merit. The quickest way to keep an SEO from being successful with your optimization campaign is to overwrite their changes with your own. However it’s still up to the client to ensure such overwriting doesn’t happen.

To be successful the SEOs work must remain in tact. Bad SEO client’s don’t take the time to ensure they or their team work only from the live SEOd version of the site.

Argue every recommendation I once had a client that went item by item arguing every recommendation we made. Calls to action? Too lowbrow for his audience. Using keywords? Too pedantic. It’s important for the client to seek to understand the reasoning behind the changes, but you can’t expect the SEO to improve your website’s exposure if you are tying their hands in their efforts. If you don’t agree with what the SEO is doing, give them the rope to hang themselves. Track the results, if conversions drop then undo it. But at least give it a chance to perform.

Clients need to understand the value of what the SEO is doing. Bad SEO clients question every change forcing the SEO to exhaust hours of time explaining and defending every decision.

Try to out SEO the SEO I’m a strong proponent of the client being involved and having an understanding of the overall SEO campaign. However there comes a point where the client has to let the SEO do their job. The SEO was hired because they have a skill set and area of expertise, presumably one the client themselves don’t have. The client can’t assume they know more about SEO than the SEO does and must give the SEO freedom to implement SEO their way.

Working with the SEO with brainstorming and strategy development is a good thing. Bad SEO clients push for every SEO tactic they learn about or supplement their own SEO knowledge into the campaign.

Call/email all the time Communication is essential to a well-oiled optimization machine, but too much of anything is a bad thing. Clients who call the SEO up on a regular bases because they want to talk about this, that or the other, are not doing themselves any favors. Whether they want to talk strategy, success, implementation or whatever, these communications must be done in an orderly fashion. The SEO should not be expected to field regular unwarranted calls from the client that suck up the time they would otherwise be investing in that client’s SEO campaign.

Clients should be interested in their campaign but not at the expense of the campaign itself. Bad SEO clients spend more time talking to the SEO than the SEO has available, preventing them from doing the job they were hired for.

SEOs love to work with good clients. Consequently, good SEO clients get better results than bad SEO clients. Bad SEO clients suck up the SEO’s time, create distractions from the campaign and prevent the SEO from doing the things that get the results the client ultimately wants. Ensuring that you are not a bad SEO client also ensures that the SEO can focus on your success.

For those thinking of re-training, it’s crucial that you first make a list of your expectations from the position you’re looking to get into. It’s important to discover if things would be a lot better before much time and effort is spent re-directing your life. So much better to look at the destination you’re hoping for, to avoid disappointment:

* Is collaborating with others important to you? Would that be with a small ‘tightly-knit’ team or with many new people? It could be working by yourself on specific tasks would give you pleasure?

* What do you need from the area of industry you choose? (Things do change – look at the building trade, or banks for example.)

* After re-training, how long a career do you hope for, and can your chosen industry give you the confidence that will happen?

* Is it important for the course you’re re-training in to be in a market sector where you know you’ll have a job until your pension kicks in?

It’s important that one of your key sectors is the IT industry – everyone knows that it’s getting bigger. It’s not all nerdy people gazing at their PC’s the whole time – of course those roles do exist, but the majority of roles are carried out by people like you and me who are earning rather well.

Chat with any knowledgeable consultant and they can normally tell you many terrible tales of how students have been duped by salespeople. Make sure you deal with an industry professional that quizzes you to find out what’s right for you – not for their bank-account! You need to find an ideal starting-point that fits you.

With some real-world experience or certification, it may be that your starting point of study is very different to someone completely new.

If this is going to be your first crack at studying for an IT examination then you should consider whether to begin with user-skills and software training first.

The perhaps intimidating chore of getting your first IT job is often eased by some companies, via a Job Placement Assistance facility. Ultimately it isn’t so complicated as you might think to get a job – assuming you’re well trained and qualified; the growing UK skills shortage sees to that.

One important thing though, avoid waiting until you have passed your final exams before polishing up your CV. Right at the beginning of your training, enter details of your study programme and tell people about it!

Quite often, you’ll land your initial role while still studying (even when you’ve just left first base). If your CV doesn’t say what you’re learning (and it hasn’t been posted on jobsites) then you’re not even going to be known about!

Most often, an independent and specialised local employment service (who will get paid by the employer when they’ve placed you) is going to give you a better service than a centralised training company’s service. Also of course they should be familiar with local industry and the area better.

In a nutshell, as long as you focus the same level of energy into securing a job as into training, you’re not going to hit many challenges. A number of people strangely invest a great deal of time on their course materials and then just stop once they’ve passed their exams and would appear to think that businesses will just discover them.

The classroom style of learning we remember from school, utilising reference manuals and books, can be pretty hard going sometimes. If you’re nodding as you read this, find training programs that are on-screen and interactive.

Where possible, if we can study while utilising as many senses as possible, our results will often be quite spectacular.

The latest home-based training features easy-to-use DVD or CD ROM’s. Real-world classes from the instructors will mean you’ll take everything in by way of the demonstrations and explanations. Knowledge can then be tested by practicing and interacting with the software.

It’s very important to see the type of training provided by the company you’re considering. It’s essential they incorporate instructor-led video demonstrations with virtual practice-lab’s.

Avoid training that is purely online. Always choose CD or DVD based study materials where offered, so that you have access at all times – and not be totally reliant on a quality and continuous internet connection.

Make sure you don’t get caught-up, like so many people do, on the training process. Training for training’s sake is generally pointless; this is about gaining commercial employment. You need to remain focused on where you want to go.

It’s common, in some situations, to thoroughly enjoy one year of training and then spend 20 miserable years in a tiresome job role, entirely because you stumbled into it without the correct research at the outset.

Be honest with yourself about earning potential and the level of your ambition. Often, this changes what particular exams will be expected and what’ll be expected of you in your new role.

Seek guidance and advice from an experienced professional, irrespective of whether you have to pay – it’s usually much cheaper and safer to find out at the start if a chosen track will suit, instead of finding out after 2 years that the job you’ve chosen is not for you and now need to go back to square one.

There is an interesting post by Gab Goldenberg on Search Engine Journal that looks at 101 tips for buying text link ads. I know many web owners have considered buying links as part of link building strategies but have steered away for fear of possible search penalties. It does raise a question as to whether they are worth the time and effort that goes into acquiring and managing these links.

The post calls them text link ads and they are – they are also simply paid links, a practice that Google frowns heavily upon. However, there is one statement that is worth thinking about:

It is a very true statement. I won’t go into the rights and wrongs of paid links, you can make your own mind up about that issue. Creating an organic link is not difficult. In the past, link farms have worked on the basis of link quantity over quality – these days quality is more important than quantity although they both have their places.

This is where a portion of text is reprinted with a link back to the originating site (as I have done above). The question now is how much are you willing to pay to have someone quote you? The second question is how many of these links do you need – 30,40,50? If you were to buy 50 of these links the total cost is “1000. Could that money be better spent elsewhere?

We should concentrate on more accurate ‘phrases’ that give us less competition. They’re known as long tail searches, because they’ll have several keywords. It depends on your competition, but long-tail searches can be up to 6 or 7 words. Usually, a long-tail phrase is three or four words.

We prefer to begin optimisation strategies with phrases that bring in less than five hundred thousand results. Sometimes we’ll consider higher counts if the top results are not benefitting from optimisation. As time goes on, we’ll benefit from an automatic improvement on the bigger terms as well. And as our work makes progress, we’ll be onto the bigger terms a few months down the road. This strategy is also far more targeted at the start. Frankly, we’re only interested in the customers who are looking specifically for what we offer. There’s much more chance these people will buy!

You should also build back links to various different pages – and not just your website’s homepage. The SE’s respond well to this. Product Group pages are a good place for back links. It’s worth driving specific search terms to these pages – they often have links to lots of other product pages. Don’t just create back-links to your home-page. Bing, Yahoo and Google are all paying more attention to the way a website’s pages are managed and listed.

Therefore, we’re looking for phrases that yield less overall results – but quite accurately sum up what we do or what we offer. These ‘long tail’ phrases might contain a number of specific keywords. They could be anything from two to seven words in length. Generally we use 3 to 4 words.

We prefer to begin optimisation strategies with phrases that bring in less than five hundred thousand results. Sometimes we’ll consider higher counts if the top results are not benefitting from optimisation. As time goes on, we’ll benefit from an automatic improvement on the bigger terms as well. And as our work makes progress, we’ll be onto the bigger terms a few months down the road. This strategy is also far more targeted at the start. Frankly, we’re only interested in the customers who are looking specifically for what we offer. There’s much more chance these people will buy!

You should also build back links to various different pages – and not just your website’s homepage. The SE’s respond well to this. Product Group pages are a good place for back links. It’s worth driving specific search terms to these pages – they often have links to lots of other product pages. Don’t just create back-links to your home-page. Bing, Yahoo and Google are all paying more attention to the way a website’s pages are managed and listed.

Hence, a link saying “click here for…” isn’t a good idea. We’ve simply voted for the words Click Here. Whoever is going to type that phrase into the Search Engine? Obviously no-one.

That’s why it’s so necessary to use the right anchor text. For it represents all the phrases your site will be listed for. And by the way, if you DO Google “Click Here” you will always find the Adobe Reader download site at the top. Is that because it describes their site? Of course not! It’s simply that ‘click here’ features on so many sites to download Adobe Reader.

So the Search Engines draw on the anchor text ‘phrase’. It’s quite sensible really. Search Engines seek to replicate how an actual person would look for something. But in many ways your actual page content is irrelevant. For if the text that is pointing to your site says Blue Flowers, then that is what you will be listed for! That’s irrefutable!

Of course, it’s not quite as simple as that… The wording on a page being pointed at and its title are taken into account by the Search Engines. And a wealth of other details also. Just as an example – they’ll look at the spread and relevancy of the ‘voting’ sites.

The crux of it all is though that a mass of back links solves all the problems! And these need to be from as many different sites as possible – with the correct phrases used as anchor text. The ‘authority’ of a site also plays a major part: Receiving a link from a top site like Microsoft is much more valuable than one from a start-up site.

There’s quite an art to choosing the right keyword phrases. Make sure you do sufficient research – it’s not a case of guesswork! The key really though is – Which words do potential clients ‘Google’ when they’re searching for the things you supply? Because that’s exactly what your keywords and anchor text should be.

But these keywords can’t be just randomly chosen without thought, investigation and testing. The best results can sometimes be quite surprising. So many different phrases come to mind when we think of what to search for. Imagine you’re intent on sleeping better. You might think to search for ‘comfortable bed’. Whereas another person may type in “I can’t sleep”.

Would you really want to trust your marketing to vague ideas and feelings about what might be typed in? DO NOT under-estimate the value that well-phrased keywords can carry. The amount of traffic you’ll receive is intrinsically linked to this. A comparison could be made with a Business Yellow Pages entry. If you’ve been entered as a Florist, but you’re actually an electrician, you’re not going to get anywhere. Similarly, for effective and profitable optimisation on-line, you must perform thorough keyword research and analysis.

This process only utilises the web as viewing gallery, which is quite wrong. It is a completely interactive place where billions of people can research, examine, discuss and choose services and products in the comfort of their own home. We can find the sites we’re looking for because Google, Bing and Yahoo etc. have formulated huge site directories to simplify the task. Think of the chaos involved if the Business Yellow Pages wasn’t in alphabetical order: We’d be forever frustrated and disappointed.

The SE’s have got it all sussed. Which means businesses can no longer use traditional marketing. It’s now essential to be indexed by the major SE’s if you want to be found on the web. But there’s a lot more to it than that… Statistics reveal that almost no-one looks ‘below the fold’ on the 1st page.

So to give all companies a chance to be on the first pages, the Search Engines came up with a new form of paid advertising. It’s called Pay Per Click, and advertisers are only charged when someone ‘clicks’ on their ad. It was revolutionary. Because now you didn’t have to spend anything until an interested person looked at your web page. This is an incredibly targeted way of advertising, and done properly, can yield some exceptional results.

Unfortunately, PPC advertising has now become literally swamped with adverts in most fields. The price of many clicks has been driven up massively, mainly because too many bidders are chasing the same terms. Today, it can sometimes be impossible to make a profit using PPC. In particular, where a sale requires a large number of clicks. So Search Engine Optimisation is now becoming a preferred method for many to get to page 1.

To illustrate the challenge: Get onto one of the Search Engines now and look for some keywords that you think apply to you. Can you see your website on the 1st three pages? Most likely not. Which means you’re just like the shop in the middle of nowhere. If the answer was yes, are those terms actually being used by customers?

You may have some successful experience of PPC advertising. But is your campaign properly managed? Is your investment really paying off? Which are your most successful areas? Every thriving campaign is dependent on split testing and measuring. You’ll never get the best results without correct figures.

It’s very evident today that both global and local commerce are moving swiftly onto the internet. Ensure that you’re going with the flow, and really capitalising on the technology available to win.

Search Engine Optimisation takes into account the factors used by Google, Bing etc. when they position web sites in their natural listings.

When we search for anything, up come the natural search lists. These do not include the paid listings. Generally, the paid advertising is on the right of the screen. A box at the top of the page will also contain paid ads. All the others are ‘naturally’ listed from the Search Engine’s index. Search Engines use algorithms to determine a website’s relevancy and importance. This is how they decide on which order to place them in.

Of course, we would like to be as high as possible on page one. No-one’s going to find us if we’re listed on page seven. We can’t know for sure about all the criteria Google and the like use to rank us. It’s not in the SE’s interest to tell people everything they do.

Nevertheless, an entire industry has evolved around Search Engine listings. On the one hand there are SE’s purposely filing a wide array of new patents. Causing much mystification about their methods! On the other side you have an SEO industry. This utilises a series of tests and measurements to determine the most pertinent factors.

The objective is to maximise both ‘on-page’ and ‘off-page’ optimisation. Off-web criteria also play a part in SE listings, (e.g. demographics). This doesn’t come under the remit of SEO though. For a full discussion of Off-Page factors, please refer to our other article on this subject.

‘On-Page’ SEO

This involves making your web pages ‘friendlier’ to the Search Engines. It involves ‘correctly’ configuring your web site. For instance: The correct use and density of keywords and internal linking; H1 and H2 header tags and meta tags.

It doesn’t matter if all that sounds very confusing.

In reality, this is very easy to control, but not wildly effective. Some would argue its effect is so small it’s irrelevant. There was a time when SE’s were ‘duped’ by On-Page optimisation. Not any longer though.

If, however, off-page has been optimised, (and there are many inbound back-links), then on-page continues to be important. If that’s the case, internal linking and a certain amount of on-page fine-tuning can reap rewards.

Things To Consider…

Do not START to SEO with phrases that yield millions of results. In a search for ‘Car Insurance’ on Google in the UK for example, you would find around 70 million results. Anyone can see it’s not wise to try and compete with 70 million other pages when you’re just starting out!

On the other hand… The phrase ‘Southampton Car Insurance’ only brings in three hundred thousand. (Assuming I was a car insurance provider in Southampton.) This still seems quite a large amount, but it’s actually not in search terms.

I would have a far better chance of getting ranked for that phrase quickly than I would for just ‘car insurance’. In actual fact, it takes very deep pockets to get a premier listing for a term like ‘car insurance’. My competition would be the huge corporations. So not a great idea – especially, in fact, when there are much better ways to go about it.

In fact, what we really need are terms that more specifically reflect our product or service. In the industry, we call these ‘long-tail’ searches – as they contain multiple keywords. Depending on how competitive your market is, the phrases could be from 2 to 7 words long. Typically they will be 3 or 4 words long.

In general, our recommendation is to begin SEO’ing with keyword phrases that reveal fewer than 500,000 results. (There are occasions when we might accept a higher yield figure at the start – when the top entries are not well optimised.) Then, as we build back-links, we’ll automatically start to gain some ground on the bigger search phrases. If we’ve worked well, we can start hitting the bigger terms in a few months time. It’s a much more targeted strategy. Frankly, we’re only interested in the customers who are looking specifically for what we offer. There’s much more chance these people will buy!

Don’t just limit building back links to your website’s home page – link them up to various sub pages as well. Google and the other Search Engines like this ‘deep linking’. Try back-linking product group pages. They often have links to several other sub-pages about individual products. So don’t limit the back links to one page. Google and the other SE’s are looking more and more at how individual pages on your site are listed and treated.

But indexing alone isn’t the answer – as it’s a waste of time if you’re several pages down. Studies have proved that the vast majority of traffic goes to the first 5 slots on page 1.

But Search Engines are interested in making money – so to overcome high rating difficulties, paid advertising was introduced. You Pay Per Click, so you’re only charged for your ad when someone clicks on it. This caused quite a storm when it happened. Basically, the only time you now paid was when someone who was already interested asked to look at your site. Pay per Click is a very well targeted method of marketing. With the right knowledge it can produce a good return.

Alas, the market is bombarded with this form of advertising these days. New online marketers have forced up the price per click, largely through over-the-top bidding. Click prices are now so expensive in some markets that they’re no longer profitable. Especially where large volumes of clicks are required to make a sale. This has re-ignited the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) flame. Those with expertise are working to drive their sites to the top.

To illustrate the challenge: Get onto one of the Search Engines now and look for some keywords that you think apply to you. Can you see your website on the 1st three pages? Most likely not. Which means you’re just like the shop in the middle of nowhere. If the answer was yes, are those terms actually being used by customers?

Maybe you’ve already tried some Pay Per Click advertising so you appear in the paid listings, and maybe you’ve achieved some success so far. Are you managing your campaign well though? Your ROI will be compromised without sufficient data.
